Learning Environment A. Classroom Management: Describe and explain activities that would develop a positive climate where students will feel like valued members of a learning community. In the classroom, students are all encouraged to participate in classroom discussions. When stating opinions or concerns during a lesson, all responses are listened to by the teacher and responded to in a positive manner. Students may ask as many questions as they need in order to complete their classwork. If they need more help, they are pulled into a small group in order to focus on their work with fewer distractions. Students are also able to participate in center activities. The students are given a new center every day and they must be able to work in their center with three other classmates without causing trouble. Students are learning how to work well with others and how to share with multiple classmates. By doing these activities, students are able to discuss and state their opinions, know that asking for more help is not a bad thing, and that working well with others is a positive attribute. List the 3-5 behavioral expectations or rules for all students in your classroom. 1. Students need to be good listeners in the classroom. To better understand that material that is being taught, students should pay attention when the teacher is speaking and they should not be making noises with their mouths, moving around on the carpet, or talk without raising their hands first. 2. When working in the classroom, students need to be able to keep their hands to themselves. In order to have a positive learning environment, students should not feel threatened by their classmates. Each student should keep their hands to themselves and if one of their classmates is unable to do so, they should not retaliate but they should let the teacher know. 3. When walking in line to leave the classroom for any length of time, students must walk quietly with their hands behind their backs and with no talking. Students are to walk on the black line that is in the hallway and should stay in a straight line when there is no black line. If they are able to walk quietly and another teacher sees how well they are doing, they may get a class paw. List the hierarchy of consequences that you will follow when infractions of the rules occur in the classroom. In the classroom, a clip system is used. There are four levels: green for great behavior, yellow for moderate behavior, orange for poor behavior, and red for severe misbehavior. 1. First offense: when students are unable to follow the rules or directions in an appropriate manner, their clip will move down one spot on the chart to yellow. 2. Second offense: when students continue to disrupt the class or are unable to follow the rules and directions, their clip moves down another spot to orange. If the students clip is moved to orange multiple times in one week, a note will be sent home to the parent(s) explaining the childs behavior and the concerns for the rest of the class.

3. Third offense: if the student is unable to correct their behavior and continues to disrupt the classroom, not follow directions or rules, and is not behaving in an appropriate manner, their clip will be moved to red. If a students clip is moved to red any time during the week, it is an automatic note sent home to the parent(s). 4. If students display severe misbehavior before a first or second offense, they will be sent to the office and their parents will be called immediately. To ensure a positive and safe environment, the student will not be allowed to stay in the classroom while they are misbehaving in a way that may jeopardize the other students. 5. List the types of intrinsic and extrinsic reinforcements that you will utilize in the classroom. a. Intrinsic i. Completing classroom activitiesstudents complete their work and enjoy showing the teacher how well they did. Whether it is a handout or a small book, students will ask for some help to finish but for the most part they enjoy being able to complete something with very little help. ii. Participating in classroom discussionstudents enjoy being able to talk about topics in the classroom. They enjoy giving their opinion and love being able to come up to the front of the class to show the other students what they know. iii. Center timestudents participate in center time with their classmates. They work well with their groups, for the most part, and are very productive when working in certain centers. 1. When students do well with their classwork, discussions, or at center time, the teacher provides positive feedback by complementing them on their hard work. If they do well enough without having to be spoken to often, they may receive a positive note home to their parents depending on how parents react to notes home. b. Extrinsic i. Pawsitive Pawswhen students are behaving extremely well in class and are following rules and directions, they receive a Pawsitive paw. A Pawsitive paw is a small piece of paper with the students name on it, explaining what they did in the classroom that was so good. By the end of the nine weeks, if students have 25 Pawsitive paws, they get to watch a special movie. ii. Treat Boxthe treat box is a box filled with candy, pencils, and other items. In order to receive a treat from this box, children must bring in their homework every day during the week and they must behave in class. On special occasions, such as doing well during a class activity or doing well in guided reading, students may also get to receive something from treat box.

iii. Behavior Chartif a student starts the day off poorly and their clip is moved down, they are always able to move their clips back up. In order to do so, students must follow the rules and directions throughout the rest of the day. B. Non-Instructional Routines and Procedures Describe non-instructional routines and procedures that will ensure your classroom runs safely (i.e. you are providing appropriate supervision) and smoothly. o Before class starts, students will sit in the hallway until the teacher comes to the classroom. When the teacher arrives, students will walk in to the class, grab their folders with their homework in them and place them in a box, and then place their book bags in their cubbies. When they are finished, students will sit down on the carpet that is located at the front of the classroom. The teacher will send two or three students down to the cafeteria to get breakfast and bring it back to the classroom. When breakfast is ready, the teacher will calls students by row red, orange, green, blue, and purple. They will be able to get breakfast and a drink. If a student comes in late, they will be able to get breakfast after they put their things away. During breakfast time, students are allowed to go to the bathroom and get a drink of water if they do not want milk or juice. While the students are eating, the teacher will tell the students what their choices for lunch arethere are two choices. The teacher will call students by name and they will reply by saying one or two. If a student does not answer, the teacher will look for them in the class, and mark them as absent if they are not in the class. The teacher uses the lunch check list to mark students as absent when taking attendance. If a student comes in after 7:50am, they bring a paper shaped like a T to the teacher. This will let the teacher know the student is tardy, but that she still needs to ask the student what they want for lunch. If a student comes in after 8:00am, they bring in a blue tardy slip that states what they chose for lunch and the office has marked them off in the attendance records. o When class is about to end, students will be called from the carpet to retrieve their folders that contains homework and any notes home. They will then get their book bags and put their things away and sit in their seats quietly until their bus number is called. The last two students in the classroom will put the chairs on top of the desks when the other students are gone. o At the beginning of every month, students are assigned different jobs in the classroom. Jobs consist of door holder, line leader, smart board helper, paper passer, light helper, door opener, sink helper, bell ringer and table cleaner. These jobs are the main ones in the classroom. The students will be responsible to know what their jobs are and how to do them. If they do not want the responsibility, the job will be given to another student that has not had the job yet. Each student will be able to have a job throughout the year. These jobs will help the teacher by helping her complete certain tasks and keeping her from having to stop a lesson to do something. o One job that a student will have in the classroom is to pass out papers. Whenever there is work that needs to be passed out, this student will do so. This

makes it easier for the teacher so she can continue with her lesson, if needed. To collect materials, the teacher must see a students work and must give them the okay to put their work in the completed work cubby. If the teacher needs to keep the students work, the student will raise their hand to let the teacher know they are done and the teacher will look it over and collect it. In the classroom, students are not allowed to sharpen their own pencils. If they need their pencils sharpened, they will raise their hands and ask the teacher. When one student asks, the teacher will ask if any other students need their pencils sharpened and will collect the pencils to sharpen. During breakfast, center time, recess, and during classwork time, students are allowed to use the bathroom. The do not have to ask at these times. The rules for the bathroom are that the students must knock before going in, there can be one waiting in line to use the bathroom if there is someone in the bathroom, and if the toilet is dirty, the student must tell the teacher before they use it. Before lining up to go anywhere, students are seated on the carpet at the front of the room. The line leader and the door holder will be called first. After, students will be called by rows. The entire row needs to be seated properly and quietly. When called to line up they must walk and stay in line and pay attention. This keeps students from falling behind and having the students have to stop to wait. While walking down the hallway, the line will stop two times in case there are some students that have fallen behind. When transitioning between lessons or activities, students will always be seated at the carpet to listen to further instruction. This is less hectic in the classroom and students may ask questions if they are unsure of what they are doing next. In emergency situations, students must always pay attention to the teacher. The teacher will let them know how to handle situations beforehand in case the situation does occur during the school day. Drills will be done throughout the school year to show students how to handle these emergency situations. During a fire drill, students must line up as quickly and safely as possible. The teacher will then lead the student out of the classroom to the front of the school and out the front doors. Students that are unable to move quickly will be helped by the teacher assistant. The teacher and the students will go to a small field across from the school, line up in a straight line and students will then be accounted for. When all students are accounted for, teachers will raise a blue paper that says clear. The class will then wait for further instruction. If there is an identified threat outside of the school building, a lock out will occur. The teacher will secure all students inside the classroom and lock all doors. No students will exit the room until an all clear announcement is made. If there is a threat inside of the school building, a lockdown will occur. The teacher will secure all students inside the classroom and lock all doors. She will move everyone away from any windows of view. No students will exit the room until an all clear announcement is made.

If there is a tornado, students will be asked to take shelter. Staff should proceed with all students to pre-designated tornado shelter areas, preferably the southeast corner of the basement. Teachers should take with them their class roll books. If no underground shelter is available, proceed to interior hallway in lowest floor. Avoid windows, auditoriums, gymnasiums, or other structures with wide, free space overhead. In the event of an actual tornado, no student or staff member should leave the school grounds until a count has taken place. Each teacher using his/her class roll book will report on accounting to the principal or his/her designee. All other staff members will report to his/her immediate supervisor, who will, in turn, report to the principal or his/her designee.
