Lesson Plan Martin Mathes Setting 2nd Grade Rationale The students will continue learning and developing

skills to read music on the staff. The students will sing songs from the folk song repertoire. The students will identify Sol and Mi on the staff. National and State Standards 1.0 Singing alone and with others, a varied repertoire of music. 1.1 Develop skill in singing, alone and with others, major/minor pentatonic and major/minor diatonic songs. 1.2 Develop proper vocal technique. 5.0 Reading and notating music. 5.1 Read rhythm patterns written in traditional notation. 5.2 Read simple melodic patterns. 5.3 Notate simple rhythm patterns. Previous Knowledge - The students can identify Sol and Mi on a staff in traditional notation. - The students can identify simple rhythms on a staff in traditional notation. - The students can identify and demonstrate Sol, Mi, La, and Low Do in a musical context. Objectives The learner will: Identify Sol and Mi on the staff. Review the notation for Rain, Rain. Sing the folk song Starlight. Write the notation for Starlight. Materials Needed Smartboard Slide with Rain, Rain blank staff. Slide with Starlight blank staff. Worksheets for Starlight. Pencils. Piano. Procedures 1. Begin the class by asking the students what they remember from last time they were in class. 2. Reintroduce the students to the concept of the staff by having them help you find Sol on the board if Mi is demarked.

a. Hand out the staff papers and have the students use the marbles to find Sol if Mi is given b. Remind the students of the rules on how to find Sol and Mi. c. Have students come to the board with the blank staff to write where Sol is. Ask the students if they remember writing the notes to Rain, Rain. a. Have the students come up and write the notes to Rain, Rain on the board of the staff. b. Have multiple students come to the board. c. If a student has difficulty have the class help them. Once the students have written the music to Rain, Rain have them stand and sing the song. a. Then have them sing on Sol and Mi. Ask the students who has heard of Wee Willie Winkie. Sing the song for the students after they have talked about it. a. Ask the students about the song. b. Explain that the song is a folk song. c. Explain that it is from Scotland. d. Teach the song Wee Willie Winkee to the students by rote. e. Work with the students until they can perform the song on their own. Explain to the students that they can write music on a staff. a. Hand out the worksheets for the students, and explain to the students that they will work with you to write the music. b. Work on writing the music with the students.
