SPAWNing Some Ideas from The Secret Life of Bees

Ms. Varners Language Arts Class For this project you will need to think beyond what happens in the novel. Use context clues and the actions of characters to help you answer these questions:

Special powers: You have been granted special powers and have used them to
make the Civil Rights Act happen 20 years earlier. What plot points of the novel have now changed?

Problem solving: The Boatwright sisters dont tell May about Zach getting
arrested, and when she finds out the grief drives her to suicide. How would you have handled this situation differently?

Alternate view:

You are citizen of the town of Tiburon and frequently go to the shop for groceries. As of lately, youve been overhearing a lot of talk about the Boatwright sisters and their new houseguests. What kind of things are you hearing?

What if: Next:

What if T. Ray had responded with more kindness when Lily called? Would she have stayed with the Boatwrights or gone home? You are part of an African-American family in 1964. How does the Civil Rights Act affect your life? Compare your life to how it was before and how it is now. What do you do next? Learning Targets: ~I can use textual evidence to answer the different scenarios. ~I can analyze the characters to determine how they would react in these situations.

You will need to answer all five of these questions. Make sure your answers are detailed, and cite context clues when possible. These are due on Wednesday of this week!
