This article is about a school play that some of the Ole Miss football players attended entitled The Laramie Project. This play is about a boy that attended the University of Wyoming and was killed because he was gay. During the play however, some of the football players laughed at lines that hinted toward homosexuality and began to make some gay slurs toward the male actors and made remarks about the size of some of the female actors. This article was written by USA Today so obviously it was meant for all of to read but specifically aimed toward sports fans and more specifically towards people with links to Ole Miss. Obviously, this article was written to inform people of the incident but also to inform people of the actions that are being taken to solve the problem. The author emphasizes the fact that these actions are ridiculous and obscene especially coming from a sports team that it supposed to represent the universitys name. The article is also focused on the resolutions to this issue the team did apologize and the actors did not want them suspended but rather to learn from it and make a better environment for gays on campus. The author makes an assumption initially that the players were just being mean and cruel, however, later goes on to explain that these players were first semester freshman and had not been to play and did not know what to

expect. He tries to assume that maybe the players were acting in a natural way because they did not know how to respond to the play. There is always going to be bias in a media source, therefore I think the author is biased toward the fact that maybe the athletes arent as cruel as the school and the actors on set made them out to be. He obviously thinks the gesture was wrong however, maybe not as severe as it seems. Either way the players acted wrongly off of the field. I do not think there were many omissions, on the other maybe some additions that made the players seem less guilty and mean. The data within the article is effectively able to show the view of this author to the reader. However, to me these players represent the school is many different ways and are supposed to be well-behaved and disciplined on and off of the field and to me that is part of being an athlete. These players were not so professional off of the field and that can be related to my topic on how players and coaches should act on and off the field. Williams, Laura. "Why Do Athletes Make Good Role Models." 30 Oct 2011: Education. Print. This article is about how high school and college athletes make good role models for the youth of today. I just want to focus on the Education part of the article and that shows that high school and college athletes must perform in the classroom to stay on the field. The author main idea is that high school and college athletes are role models for youth in that it takes dedication not only on the field but also in the classroom, thus teaching young athletes that they must also dedicate themselves in the classroom. The authors intended audience is focused towards young athletes and parents of young athletes. The author emphasizes the dedication that a student athlete must have in order to advance their athletic career pointing out an athletes must have the grades to play in high

school and a college will only recruit players that are able to get into their school. The author assumes that an athlete must be dedicated scholastically in order to play sports and further their sports career into the college and professional level. I believe that the author has very little bias in her article but it may also be that I agree with her, in that an athlete must dedicate themselves to their studies to be an athlete. I did not see any omissions other than that some athletes may need to be more or less dedicated to their studies depending on classes and that education is not going to get you to the collegiate and pro you must also be really dedicated to the sport you play as well and there is a sort of balance that must be learned there. The evidence provided in this article does support the main points of the author in being that education and dedicating yourself to your studies is essential to being a student athlete. The objective of this article is to raise question and try to answer this question of: Are athletes the right symbols we make them out to be? Charles Barkley an NBA star says no that an athletes only job is to produce and portray themselves on the court and that is it. The author is obviously trying to provoke the audience into trying to answer the question of whether an athlete should be look upon as a role model. However, who is right? Mr. Barkley or the author who points out the many foundations and charities that athletes provide to the public. The author intends for this to be mainly read by sports fans. The author emphasizes the facts of all of the good and bad things that many athletes do. He puts a lot of emphasis on the question that he imposes throughout the article. The author I believe assumes that athletes should be idolized or looked up to rather because of the ones that build charities and give back to the communities and do things for the

communities. However, there are many more stories about athletes gone wrong than the ones that are doing good. There is plenty of bias in this article because the author is trying to give his answer and belief to this question. I do not see any omissions in this source, in fact I feel that both sides are supported equally well. I feel like the author has some points and evidence that support his points but there is also plenty of evidence that goes against him. I think this able to relate to my topic in that it is able to show good and bad of athletes off of the field. Gee, James. "Identity as an Analytic Lens for Research in Education." American Educational Research Association. 25. (2011): 99-125. Print. The main point of Mr. Gee is to explain ways to view identity. The author is trying to categorize identities and figured worlds and I want to focus on the Institutional Identity which where and institution allows to be in a certain figured world. The authors intended audience is college and professors and people interested in identity. The source emphasizes four different ways to view identity, however just focusing on Iidentity he focus on what an I-identity is. He focuses on what consists of being an Iidentity being that it is where an institution allow one to have a certain identity. In my case an institution is allowing certain people to be classified as student athletes. The author assumes these are the only ways to categorize identities yet there may be others however. The author is obviously biased towards this information because it is his theory. I do tend to believe after reading that this is an effective way to categorize identities. The evidence definitely provides evidence for the authors main points seeing that it is his theory and

he is able to provide multiple examples among other evidence to support his theory of way to categorize identity.
