George, J., Taylor, S., Whelan, G. (2012). Dorothea Orems Self-Care Theory. Retrieved from: http://currentnursing.com/nursing_theory/self_care_deficit_theory.

html The purpose of this article is to inform the reader about Dorothea Orems Theory of SelfCare and how to accurately incorporate it into practice. Most importantly it aims to compare the strengths and limitations of this theory so the reader is able to see the whole concept of self-care and apply it to their individual patients needs. This article was laid out very well. It used graphs and tables to its advantage, which made it easy to follow and understand. It first defined the different areas of self-care and then honed in on research and specific examples that had been completed using Orems theory. This allowed the reader to interpret the information given and come to their own professional conclusion. However, I did not use this research article because it did not accurately support what I was working to prove and use in my research essay. It covered caring in general but not in the ways that pertained my claim. Mixer, S. (2011). Use of the Culture Care Theory to Discover Nursing Faculty Care Expressions, Patterns, and Practices Related to Teaching Culture Care. The Online Journal of Cultural Competence in Nursing and Healthcare, 1(1), 3-14. Retrieved from: http://www.ojccnh.org/1/1/3-14.pdf The purpose of this article was to inform the reader about advantages and disadvantages in regard to nursing care in general. It focused on caring for not only the patient but to make sure that you are caring for yourself as well, (you, being the health care provider). It also incorporated teaching about care as well as cultural differences that are necessary to take notice of. I decided not to use this article because in my research essay I was primarily focusing on caring for the patient and not the health care provider specifically. Therefore, it would have disrupted the flow of my essay and been likewise irrelevant. Ray, Marilyn, Turkel, Marian. (2011). Complexity Science and Nursing. H. R. Feldman, G. R. Alexander, In Nursing Leadership. This purpose of this article was examining the science of nursing and where it began. They sanctioned it into five sections, each discussing where the science and objects of nursing originated. It defined nursing as holistic and relationship-centered. At first I had decided to use this research article for my essay because I was going to relate it to the empirical aspect of caring. However, with further examination I found that it mainly focused on the literal aspects of the science of nursing not necessarily in regards to caring. This information was useful but not for my research essay. Ulrich, C., Zeitzer, M. (2009). Ethical Issues In Nursing Practice. In The Penn Center Guide to Bioethics. Retrieved from: http://www.nursing.upenn.edu/faculty/pubs.asp? inpress=N&showall=Y&yr1=1920&yr2=2020&pID=124 This article addressed many factors, the main one being the issues that are related to ethical nursing care plans. I used moralistic reasons as an element of my personal definition; however, this article did not shed any light on that aspect. The information is presented from a case study; therefore, it is very specific. A case study cannot be generalized as normal research statistics can, so I thought it would not qualify as sufficient evidence.

Whitehead, D. (2005). Health Promotion in Nursing Practice. In Advanced Nursing, 51: 474-483. Retrieved from: http://web.ebscohost.com/ehost/pdfviewer/pdfviewer? sid=a7f4d5bbcc0f-474bThe purpose of this article was to address the different concepts of Nola Penders Health Promotion Theory and their relation to an ever improving field of nursing practice. This article was very critical concerning the Health Promotion Theory. It stated that the Health Promotion Model should be viewed as a representation of conventional health education (Whitehead, 2011) versus health promotion specifically. It went into depth explaining and giving examples as to why this model is using health education as its structure and sole focus. Although this article had points that were backed up with evidence (Pender, 2009, as cited in Whitehead, 2011), the information was not very well explained or convincing. Some of the information presented itself as if health education and health promotions go hand in hand, which was contradictory to the authors main argument. This article was very controversial so I decided to stray away from the information it provided, although it was interesting.
