Have students write a narrative story about the identity of the mask and how it is diverse from the community but also similar. Anticipatory Set (Gaining Attention)*: Read: We're different. We're the same. By: Bobbie Kates Closure (Reflecting Anticipatory Set): Re-read We're different. We're the same. By: Bobbie Kates and discuss what we've learned and how this relates to the artwork we created Formative Assessment strategy: Discussion and art making What student prior knowledge will this lesson require/draw upon? Knowledge of communities, identity, differences in people in history. Knowledge of how to use mixed media. Knowledge of representing oneself. How will you engage students in imagining, exploring, and/or experimenting in this lesson? They will explore the idea of human diversity and how it relates to themselves and to others. The students will get to experiment with portraying themselves through artwork and imagining themselves in a different light in relation to society and the communities they are a part of. How will this lesson allow for/encourage students to solve problems in divergent ways? Learning about diversity and practicing it through artwork allows for students to really work towards tolerance and acceptance. If students have a good grasp on diversity and are positive about interactions with others that are not necessarily the same as them at surface level, then they are more likely to have a positive outcome. Being tolerant and understanding diversity within society is an important part of being able to solve problems within society in divergent ways because you will not only be considering options from your own point of view. How will you engage students in routinely reflecting on their learning? Community building activities are very important in the elementary school classroom. I plan to keep students engaged on this idea and always seeking out opportunities to see and appreciate diversity. Keeping the artwork up in the classroom would be a great a reminder of the lesson, also. How will you adapt the various aspects of the lesson to differently-abeled students? I think the idea of diversity and community will be an aspect that all students should be able to understand. However, if there is a difference in ability for making art, that can be accommodated according to the students needs. Although, with art, not everything has to be the same so student's doing different Summative Assessment strategy*:
Narrative story using the terms and ideas discussed within class as well as writing a story about the artwork created.

Art Integration Lesson Plan Template 3 types of work for the same big idea is ok. For the writing aspect of this, if the student struggles with writing they could possibly do another type of writing that is easier (or harder) depending on what they need. If their vocabulary is slim, they could write their story with minimal words and pictures to portray their ideas. What opportunities/activities will students be given to revise and improve their understandings and their work? Students will reflect on their artwork, discuss with the class, and then write a story about it. They will then also revise that writing and compare it with the other children's work, as they did with their artwork. What opportunities/activities will you provide for students to share their learning in this lesson? There is a lot of discussion throughout the lesson, but the students will also get to share their artwork and writing pieces with the classs.
