Autotrophs are the producers self feeding require only raw materials to make their own food Photoautotrophs o They only need water, minerals, and CO2 + light Chemoautotrophs o Make energy to synthesize organic molecules by oxidizing ammonia or sulfur compounds! Heterotroph are the consumers other feeding Require complex organic molecules from other organisms. Decomposers - live on organic litter o a nice way to say - decaying animal or plant matter o carcasses, feces, other debris (plant or animal) Everything not an autotroph, IS a heterotroph

Photosynthesis Energy within light is captured and used to synthesize carbohydrates CO2 + H2O + light energy C6H12O6 + O2 + H2O o CO2 is reduced o H2O is oxidized o Energy from light drives this endergonic reaction Photosynthesis takes place in the chloroplast in the plant in the thylakoid membrane Chloroplast anatomy Outer and inner membrane Intermembrane space Thylakoids (think cherry pies) o Thylakoid membrane contains chlorophyll etc. (the pie crust) o Thylakoid lumen (where the cherries are) Granum- stack of thylakoids (stack of pies)

Stroma- fluid filled region between thylakoid membrane and inner membrane

Photosynthetic Reactions Light reactions - Thylakoid membranes o Take place only when light is present o Split water to form ATP, NADPH, and O2 Dark reactions (Calvin cycle) - Stroma o Can take place with or without light being present o Takes ATP and NADPH from light reactions + CO2 to make carbohydrate (CH2O) Light receptors When light hits matter it can be o Reflected o Absorbed o Transmitted Chlorophyll absorbs red and blue light o Electrons are EXCITED! But it transmits and reflects green light So leaves look green
