EDCI 270 Case 1: Teaching English as a Foreign Language Background: You and your small group are members

of a consulting firm that is in direct competition with several other similar firms for a potentially lucrative job developing instructional materials for the Education Ministry of Colombia. There is a great need within Colombia to develop lessons for their K-12 students to effectively learn English. Before awarding the contract to develop their full English curriculum, they want to review example lesson plans from each of the competing firms in order to make their decision on who should be awarded the contract. It is your job to work with your assigned group members and develop a successful lesson plan. The following is a description of the requirements and timeline for this work to be completed. Product. You will research and design a lesson plan that will focus on teaching a short English lesson (approximately 15-30 minutes) to a group of students who have limited English capabilities (Spanish is their native language). Your lesson should include: a. A description of all key components of a properly constructed lesson plan. Each of these components needs to be fully described (i.e., to the point that someone you do not know will be able to read your lesson plan and be able to successfully complete the lesson in its entirety with the desired results). 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. Overview Learning Objectives Teaching Standards Required Materials Procedures Assessment References and reference materials

b. A full description of how your information about the lesson content, technology, and teaching method was accessed (that is how you searched and found the information). Make sure you use proper APA formatting for all references you access and use as a part of your plan. NOTE: This lesson plan needs to be unique (not a copy of someone elses) however, you can use their ideas, techniques, procedures as long as you carefully document where the information was accessed. Has been trained in teaching English as a foreign language. Has been in Colombia for 3 months. She teaches multiple classes at different grade levels. Time Frame. Your finished lesson plan and all documentation must be completed and turned in during class on Monday, Sept. 23, 2013. Grading/marks. Your lesson plan proposal and presentation will be judged on a 20-point scale. The criteria include: ____ (10 pts.) Educationally valid. Learning objectives were properly identified and written. All elements of the lesson plan were thoroughly explained and described. The focus of the lesson was on something that was valuable for the students to learn. ____ (7 pts.) Practical. The lesson was doable within the class structure, size, learners age and abilities, time, location, etc. The lesson was designed within the specifications given (e.g., it was designed to be completed in 15-20 minutes within the classroom). All formatting was completed in a professional manner. Spelling and grammar mistakes were non-existent. Proper references were utilized and documented throughout. ____ (5 pts.) Motivational. A final note: After reviewing all of the lesson plans, the top 2-3 plans will be selected by a panel of judges (Dr. Newby and the graduate teaching assistants). Those plans will be sent via email to Bogot to be reviewed by Sharon (yes, Sharon Smith is a real teacher at Colegio Fundacin Nueva Granada). We will later get live feedback from Sharon about the school, her experience, and how well the selected lesson plans would work within her situation at the school.
