With this lesson plan, students will be able to verbally say in English the months of the year and spell them on paper as well. Students will learn to associate the months of the year with seasonal changes to help them by use of a visual aid. By the end of the lesson, student should be able to say the months in English, followed by an English spelling quiz on the months which must be completed with 100% accuracy. 1) Students will learn to properly pronounce each month in the year in English with 100% accuracy. 2) Students will be able to spell each month in the year on paper with 100% accuracy. 3) Students will be able to properly distinguish between the four seasons; Spring, Summer, Fall, and Winter and associate which months fall in each season. WL.MA2.2.3 2007 Identify familiar words or phrases, including cognates and words shared between languages. WL.MA2.3.3 2007 Read words and phrases aloud to practice appropriate intonation and pronunciation. WL.MA2.3.4 2007 Write familiar words and phrases. WL.MA2.5.2 2007 Integrate content area concepts and skills through relevant activities. -Flashcards with the Spanish word for the month on the front and the English word on the back. Each flashcard should be decorated with things to represent the season in which that month takes place. For example; December through February decorated with snowflakes, March through May with bright flowers, June through August with pictures of the sun and the beach, and September through November with pictures of the leaves falling off the trees. -Printed pictures off the internet to represent the seasons -A take-home handout that clearly states each month in Spanish, followed by its translation in English. Each month should have the same picture to represent the season the month falls in as the flashcards used in class. -A quiz that lists the Spanish word for each month that the students will have to complete by correctly spelling the English word next to it. -A white board 1) Start out the lesson by holding up each flash card and speaking the Spanish word for January, followed by its pronunciation in English. Then, have the students say the English word out loud as a class. Repeat this process for the rest of the months. 2) The following activity will be a game to see who can pick the correct flashcard first. Each flashcard should be hung on the white board with magnets. Separate

the class into two teams. Have a student from each team walk up to the white board. When they are ready, you read out the Spanish word for one of the months. The students at the board then have to grab for the correct flashcard with the matching English translation. Whoever the first person to grab it is; must then properly pronounce the English month. If they cannot pronounce it correctly, they will only receive one point for their team. If the student can grab the flashcard first AND correctly pronounce the word, they will receive 5 points for their team. 3) Make sure each student in the class gets at least 3 chances to go up to the white board to ensure fairness and a chance to practice the word. 4) Handout the take-home paper with each of the months in both their English and Spanish translation on it. Tell the students to bring it home and study that night. Stress that they will have a quiz on the English translation of the months the next day. 5) As a homework assignment, the students will need to turn in a copy of them writing each month, in English 5 times each. Assessment The next day, have them take a quiz to assess their progress. They will be able to look at the Spanish word on the quiz and correctly write and spell the English word next to it. For my lesson plan, I decided to come up with most of it from prior class experiences, so I would not have to look at others lesson plans on the internet. I did this as a way of giving myself more confidence that I could come up with lessons on my own. In order to find out what the topic of my lesson plan should be, I went to the Indiana state standards website to access information on what 2nd graders are supposed to be learning. I chose that grade level due to the fact the 6th and 7th graders in Columbia do not have much prior schooling, so they would be very far behind on our state standards for those grade levels. I went through and read a couple of the standards, and got the idea to base my lesson plan on learning the months of the year, because it is a common and simple thing to learn in English, with a little bit of practice of course. Then, I came up with my class activity because it was something my French class in High School did before every vocabulary quiz we took. My activity was a form of board races

that not only enforce speaking the English word in front of an entire classroom, but also helped them to quickly recognize how each English month looked written out. I chose to have the students do a required homework assignment of writing the words 5 times each, because repetition is the easiest way to remembering foreign vocabulary words and their spelling. I also chose to do this to make sure the students had a way they could study for the quiz over the months of the year in English.
