Lesson# 4 Reflections-Prediction (Dr.

O observation)
The objective for this lesson was for students to be able to predict and give reasoning for predictions of events that were happening in text. When deciding to do this specific concept of the literary elements, I had to make many considerations. The biggest consideration I had to make was providing content and assessments that would be appropriate for their age level as well as instructional level. The class reading level ranges from pre k-2nd grade and some 1st grade writing, this made finding appropriate content for their ages which ranged 11-14. The lesson was engaged with simple questions and discussions to gauge their prior knowledge on predictions and how to apply it. By asking questions such as Can anyone tell me what a prediction is? Can anyone give me an example of a prediction? The instructional mode utilized was whole class. I choose this mode mostly because it is a small class consisting of 8 students but it also is the instructional mode they are most familiar with. The instructional aides used consisted of the SMART board which displayed post assessment, and the instructional text Rons Big Mission. The text was used as a mid assessment of students learning, by stopping frequently at predetermined stopping points where students were asked to summarize the story so far, check previous predictions, and predict any future events. Students were instructed to use the pictures as clue. In this aspect I felt I could have performed better by giving student more time to view pictures. For majority of the lesson students were actively involved from making predictions frequently to completing a post-assessment as a class. I believe the informational was logical and somewhat clear. I feel I used to advanced vocabulary at some part of the instruction. I believe the resources used were very effective and useful. Firstly the book was chosen based on the demographic of the classroom with 6 out of the 8 student being African American I choose a book about a young African American boy, from South Carolina who just wanted to have his own library card. Although the content, segregation, was a little advanced for them, I thought shinning a positive light on reading would be a great selection of text. Second the post-assessment used provided different assessment style questions therefore allowing for different content to be tested. Overall I thought the lesson was received well and was very happy to expose them to literature that could relate to their lives.
