What worked well?
Students enjoyed the story and the discussion regarding spiders. We had fun discussing why some people think spiders are scary and some people find them nice and why they may feel this way. Students enjoyed the story and the video. I was pleased at how well they listened to the details in the video and were able to share new facts they had learned.
If you were to teach this unit again, what would you do differently?
With more time, I would extend the lesson to include the opportunity for students to complete an activity on the Smartboard. I would also extend the lesson to include more facts, such as the body makeup of a spider.
What evidence do you have that students met the stated objectives?
Students shared with the class their new knowledge. While we did not complete a physical paper activity, their sharing activity was recorded and saved and then shared with their classroom teachers.
What is the most important thing that you learned through this experience?
The two most important things I learned were patience and flexibility. Not all students, even if they are in the same grade will respond to the same lesson the same way. A few of the classes were more engaged than others. This could be due to various reasons, such as the time of day of the lesson, to what class they had before library-media but mostly from varying degrees of educational/developmental readiness.
