Teacher Candidate: Deandrea Gibbs Lesson # 3 Subject/Grade: Math/1st Date and Time of Lesson: November 13, 2013 Learning Objective: Students will be able to use the doubles to add strategy to help find the sum. Alignment with Standards: 1.OA.6- Add and subtract within 20 demonstrating fluency for addition and subtraction
within 10.

Developmental Appropriateness or Cross-curricular connections: This lesson is developmentally appropriate

because it allows students to become more fluent with commonly used numbers and also develops the understanding of addition, subtraction, and strategies for addition and subtraction within 20.

Assessment(s) of the Objectives:

Lesson Objective(s) Assessment(s) of the Objective(s) Pre-Assessment- Students will be asked to sit on the carpet and given manipulatives. I will give them a problem and see how well they use the manipulatives to solve it. (Ex. Can you guys show me 1+1 with you cubes?) During-Assessment- Have worksheet displayed on the smart board that the students will complete. I will tell the students to do a certain section of the worksheet on their own before I call them up to complete the problem. As they complete their problems I will walk the classroom and take anecdotal notes. Post-Assessment- Have the children complete another section of the worksheet on their own, I will collect the worksheet, and then we will go over the problems as a class. (While their at stations I will check the worksheets for accuracy) Use of Formative Assessment This assessment data will determine if the children are able to fluently add and subtract within 20 in the future grades ahead.

Students will be able to use the doubles to add strategy to help find the sum.

Accommodations: If students need extra assistance, I will pull students individually and go through solving double
facts using manipulatives.

Materials: Connecting cubes, worksheets, and smart board.

Procedures:
1.) Bring students to the carpet for the math lesson. 2.) Tell the children that today we are going to discuss another way of adding. A. So you guys have been learning all sorts of ways to add this week such as using count ons with 1, 2, and 3 to add, count ons using pennies to add, and yesterday you guys learned about adding using number lines. Well today we are going to talk about adding using doubles. 3.) Ask the students if they know what doubles are. A.Can anybody tell me what you think doubles are? 4.) Allow the students to respond 5.) Explain to them what doubles actually are. A.Well doubles are when the two numbers that you are adding together are the same. For example 1+1, 3+3, etc. 6.) Tell them that we are going to use our connecting cubes to solve some of these problems. 7.) Hand each student two sets of connecting cubes that are different colors. 8.) Ask the students to use the set of cubes to solve the problem given. A.Can you guys show me 1+1 using your cubes? Hint hint, I gave you two different colors for a reason. 9.) Once the problem is given check to see how each student is putting their connecting cubes together. 10.) After they finish that, go over the problem with the connecting cubes 11.) Have students come up to the chart paper to write the addition sentence. ( Repeat this until 10+10 is reached) 12.) After doing a few problems in sequential order (1+1, 2+2, 3+3, etc.), ask the students if they notice anything about whats happening to the sum and also let the students know what the addition sentence is called (doubles fact). 13.) Once the children have had time to answer, point out how the sums go up two each time. 14.) After working with the connecting cubes, send the students back to their desk. 15.) Have the helper pass out the worksheet. 16). Pull up the worksheet on the smart board. 17.) Complete the worksheet with the class. (some of the worksheet will be completed individually). 18.) After the worksheet is completed, hand the class back over to the cooperating teacher.

Activity Analysis: Adding using the connecting cubes -This activity supports the objective because the students will be using the manipulatives to assist in adding doubles. Recording double facts on chart paper - This activity allows them to visually see the doubles fact and it can help with their memorization of the concept being taught. *The smart board will be incorporated in this lesson for the students when they record their answer to the problem on the board. The worksheet will also be displayed on the board in order the class to complete as a whole. References:
