Ashley Louth Mathematics Lesson Plan: Ten Frames Grade: First Subject/Topic/Activity: Using a ten frame to recognize and

count numbers 1 to 10 Objective: Students will be able to recognize numbers on a ten-frame, noting the relationship of those numbers to 5 and 10. Materials: o Counter circles o Ten-Frames (one for each student) o White board o Markers o Worksheet o Pencils Procedure: Introduction: I will introduce the ten-frame to the students. I will ask if any students have seen or used a ten frame before. If they had used it they can explain it to the class. After or if no one remembers what a ten-frame is, I will the students about it. I will explain that only one counter goes in each square. There are five squares on the top and five squares on the bottom making a total of ten. Body: We will play Crazy Mixed-Up Numbers (Activity 8.15). I will call out numbers from 0 to 10 and students will have to make this number using their ten-frame. This game gives the students practice working with the ten-frame but also builds problem solving skills because the students may clear the whole board between numbers or simply add to or take away from to create new numbers. Crazy Numbers: 3 10 - 7 4 5 9 2 6 0 8 - 1 We will play the Five-Frame Tell-About Activity (Activity 8.14) but with ten-frames instead of five-frames. Here we will practice showing different numbers using counter circles on the ten-frame. First I will give a number to students and then they will display it on their board on their desk. After every student has it written I will ask them to tell me about this number looking at their ten-frame. How many more than five is it? How many less than ten is it? Tell About Numbers: 8 5 - 2 6 - 9 4 7 10 - 1 - 3 Conclusion: Students will complete a review worksheet that will be checked and reviewed to check for their comprehension of the lesson. Assessment: The formative assessment will be the worksheet that students complete at eth end of the lesson. Differentiation: If students are struggling they can be spoken to individually and helped to learn how to use the ten-frame. This will become very apparent during the closing when students work independently to complete the worksheet.
