Mini Lesson Planning Tool for Integrating Technology Title of Lesson American Political Parties Curriculum / Content Area

Government / Social Science th Grade Level: 10

PURPOSE / OBJECTIVES: Students will identify American political parties with an emphasis on the two major parties, Democratic and Republican. Students will go on a webquest to find true minor parties and define their platform on national security, healthcare, and the U.S. economy. CURRICULUM STANDARDS:

National Standards for Civics and Government: Content Standard D2: Students should be able to explain the term republican as it refers to the Republican Party in the United States. Content Standard E2: Students should be able to evaluate the ways that the media influences public opinion.

ACTIVITIES:

Jigsaw: Divide into expert groups. Each group is assigned a political platform for a party. There will be 4 groups; Republican, Democrat, Libertarian, Tea. Each group will go on a webquest about their political partys platforms on their device and become an expert on it. Take 10 minutes Rotate to jigsaw groups. One person from each group teams together to form a new group. Then, each person will demonstrate knowledge of their platform and teach the rest of the group about their platform. Each group should complete their graphic organizer Comparing Party Platforms Take 10 minutes. Following group work each group will be asked to explain one platform. Take 5-10 minutes Exit ticket as assessment Take 5 minutes

Answer the following questions: 1. Do I know how to use the technology tool(s) that will be used by my students? Yes. The students will use their devices to research platforms of their group party. 2. What technology skills do my students already have that are needed for this lesson? Internet research skills General internet research skills 3. What technology skills will they need to learn to complete this lesson successfully? The ability to discern between a credible website versus one with inaccurate information.

4. What is the appropriate setting for this lesson (classroom, lab, library, home)? Is this setting available for my students to use? We will be completing this lesson within the classroom using student devices. As we have a small class (12 students in total) there are classroom devices (2 laptops, 1 iPad, 1 Kindle) that may be used by students that do not have a device. 5. What tools and resources will I need? (List of all Web sites, specific software and hardware, and other needs.) Websites: www.gop.com www.democrats.org www.lp.org www.teaparty.org www.online-stopwatch.com/classroom-timers Devices: Student devices Laptop (for teacher to use PowerPoint and timer) Elmo If needed, additional laptop, iPad, Kindle 6. How much time do I need to allow for this lesson? A total of 45 minutes will be allotted. Approximate times are as follows; Introduction 5 minutes Group Webquesst 10 minutes Jigsaw Change 10 minutes Class Review/Discusion 5-10 minutes Exit Ticket 5 minutes 7. Who can help me with the planning and/or implementation of this lesson? There are no additional helpers. 8. How will I assess the students learning? Assessment will consist of an exit ticket.
