Lesson Plan Daily Topic: Precipatation and Evaporation in the Rainforest (Science 3rd Grade) Objectives: TSW be able

to learn the differences between condensation and evaporation. TSW able to use a physical representation to understand the changing properties of water that happen within the rainforest. TSW able to identify why it the cycle of rain is important for the rainforest. Content Standards: 1) Ask questions about objects and events in the environment (e.g., plants, rocks, storms) (SI-E-A1) 2) Pose questions that can be answered by using students own observations, scientific knowledge, and testable scientific investigations (SI-E-A1) 3) Use observations to design and conduct simple investigations or experiments to answer testable questions (SI-E-A2) Procedure: 1) TTW present a presentation to her class showing them what evaporation and precipitation are. 2) TSW will discuss what each property is. 3) TTW will ask questions and promote discussions before activity begins. Essential Question: How does water change? Prerequisite Skills: 1) Students should be able to write complete sentences. 2) Students should be able to compare and contrast. 3) Students should know that water can be a liquid, solid, or gas and can go back and forth from one form to the other. Accommodations:

1) Students who have difficulties with reading and writing can fill in only a few sentences on the chart or can listen to the descriptions on the website instead of reading them. 2) Also instead of the chart you can have the students just discuss what they learned in groups and do more of a class discussion instead of written work. Student Assessments: 1) Group discussions 2) Have students draw the results of what happened to the water in the cans. Tell them to be prepared to share and describe their drawings. 3) Have students share their pictures and describe the results that they saw.

Activity:
Objective: TSW discover the disappearance of water over a certain amount of time. Materials: 1. Containers with lids (a coffee can works well) 2. Water 3. Wooden stirring sticks (paint stirrers) 4. Markers 5. Colored Sticky Dots 6. Measuring cups Procedures: 1. Show students a coffee can filled halfway with water. Provide the following instructions to the students: Each group will receive two coffee cans that will each be filled with the same amount of water. You will cover one of the cans and leave the other one open. Over the next few days youll watch the cans to find out what happens to the water over time. Your job is to keep a journal that shows the results of what you see happening in each can. We will discuss what happens at the end of our study."

2. Each student pair should label their cans with their names. Mark each can with a colored dot. 3. Show the students the wooden splints. Ask students how the splints could be used to test what happens to the water level over time. 4. Each group/pair should use their measuring cup to fill each can with the same amount of water. 5. Have students measure the water levels by dipping their splints into water at the side of the can until it touches the bottom. They should make a thin line on their splint at the water level. Mark the splints with another colored dot that matches the coffee can colored dot where the measurement was taken. 6. Place the can in a safe area and instruct the students to cover one of the cans. Explain again to the students that one can will remain covered for the tests. 7. Students should check the cans on a regular basis (daily or every other day) and record observations in their journal. They should use markers to mark the water levels on their splints. Based on their sticks, the students should draw an illustration in their journal that shows what is happening to the water in the cans over time. 8. Extension: Have each group glue its marked sticks to a piece of construction paper. After the sticks have been glued, students should label each of the lines for the days of measurements taken. The students should use this to help them answer and understand the following questions in the Assessment section Time: The students will have 30 minutes to complete this activity.
