Make Media about Social Movements

Ethnic Studies Quarter 2 2013 with T. Wiley Expectations: Work (with a partner) in order to create a media presentation of a social movement. Research, write, and create! Create media with your peers as the audience. Your work and research may inspire someone to study and possibly be moved to action for the sake of social justice. 1. Choose one Social Justice Movement or Resistance Event that relates to race, ethnicity, or class. Sample list of Radical Movements: American Indian Movement Black Power/Black Panther Party or Black Studies Movement Brown Berets (Chicano/Mexican-American community organization) Chicano Movement Fair Immigration Reform Movement Farm Workers Movement (Cesar Chavez) I Hotel Struggle (Filipinos & multi-racial, student, religious, LGBT, community activist organization) Prison Reform Movement/Prison Abolition Movement (contemporary) San Francisco State College Student Movement (education for students of color) Students for a Democratic Society/Revolutionary Youth movement/ Weather Underground 2. Read and Research the events and movements. Read at least two credible articles! 3. Be able to answer the following questions. Answers should be the students original work and typed. (Paper must be at least 250 words!) 1. What (perceived and real) problems led to the movement? 2. Who joined/supported the movement? Why? 3. What were the goals? 4. How were movements organized? 5. What strategies or tactics did the movement use? Why? 6. How did the state and media affect the social movement? 7. What impact did social movement have? What can we use/learn from the movement? 4. Create a media presentation that would be accessible to your peers and people your age, so that they can be slightly more informed. You must create at least 2 different forms! Write at least paragraph in order to explain each creative work! Examples of the media presentation could include: Animation Remake news media Blog Short movie Digital poster Song, Poem, Rap Photo essay/collage Video, video collage, voice-over Podcast, or audio recording Other creative media?!
