Grade: 8 School: Apple Middle School Time Allowed: 60 minutes

Objectives: This lesson is designed to develop students understanding of multiple historical landmarks within North Carolina. Upon completion of this lesson, students will be able to: 1. List numerous (at least three) historical landmarks within North Carolina. 2. Communicate the importance of at least two of the historical landmarks discussed in class 3. Locate four landmarks on their blank state map Materials: 1. Blank North Carolina state maps 2. Short answer worksheets 3. Pencils Organization: Individual Teaching Mode: Direct Provisions for Individual Differences: There will be a list provided on the board/overhead of important landmarks within North Carolina. I will also go over these landmarks within a power point presentation. Students should take notes of these landmarks for reference. Students will also be presented with a blank map of North Carolina for locating the historical landmarks like presented on my sample map. Teaching Behavior Focus: Lesson Activities Set Ground Rules: Today we will be discussing historical landmarks within North Carolina. I expect that you all listen respectfully and take notes. I would like you all to realize that at the end of this unit, I will be testing you on this material and therefore it is extremely important that you retain the information we go over today. Step One: Anticipatory Set (Motivation) What relevance do these landmarks have to North Carolina history? (List multiple landmarks on board and emphasize their importance in North Carolina). Step Two: Overview of Learning Outcomes to Pupils

At the end of the day you will be given a small short answer worksheet where youll describe landmarks you learned about today. Step Three: Input of Info PowerPoint using visual map to help with mini lecture. Step Four: Modeling I will teach by showing them how I expect landmarks to be presented on their maps. I will also show examples of how Id like their short answers on their worksheets. Step Five: Checking for Understanding Ask students to identify three landmarks and briefly describe them. Step Six: Guided Practice Give students a blank North Carolina map where they are to plot three to four landmarks. Step Seven: Independent Practice Students will take home the map and plot at least seven more landmarks. Step Eight: Temporary Closure Discuss some of the landmarks students chose to write about in class.
