Inequalities in One Triangle

Section 5.5

Daily Homework Quiz Copy Question and Answer

Aim

How do we use triangle measurements to decide which side is the longest or which angle is the largest? How do we use the Triangle Inequality? Check homework. How do we use triangles in real life?

Side Inequality Theorem

If one side of a triangle is longer than another side, then the angle opposite the longer side is larger than the angle opposite the shorter side.

A

C

mA > mC

Angle Inequality Theorem

If one angle of a triangle is larger than another angle, then the side opposite the larger angle is longer than the side opposite the smaller angle.
D

EF > DF

Example 1

Write the measurements of the triangles (line

segments and angles) in order from least to greatest.

D L

H

mL < mQ< mB QB < BL < QL

mL < mD< mH DH < LH < DL

Checkpoint 1

mA < mC < mB BC < AB < AC

ED < DF < EF mF < mE < mD

Triangle Inequality Theorem

The sum of the lengths of any two sides of a triangle is greater than the length of the third side.

AB + BC > AC
AC + BC > AB AB + AC > BC

Exterior Angle Inequality

The measure of an exterior angle of a triangle is greater than the measure of either of the two nonadjacent interior angles.
A

1
C B

m1 > mA and m1 > mB

Example 2

Is it possible to form a triangle with side lengths of 2 cm, 2 cm and 5 cm?

No!

Is it possible to form a triangle with side lengths 4 cm, 2 cm, and 5 cm.

Yes!

Is it possible to form a triangle with side lengths 3 cm, 2 cm, and 5 cm?

No!

Checkpoint 2
A triangle has one side of 10 cm and another of 14 cm. Describe the possible lengths of the third side.
A picture will help! Our picture does not have to be drawn to scale. It will just help us to get a possible picture of how the triangle might look.

Checkpoint 2 continued
We can set up some inequalities and solve them. x + 10 > 14 x>4

10 + 14 > x 24 > x
Obviously x + 14 > 10 so this one does not really help us. So we conclude that x must be greater than 4 cm and less than 24 cm!

Summarizer

In ABC, B is obtuse and mA < mC. State what you know about the lengths of the sides of ABC (hint draw a picture). The triangle could look like this

CB < AB < AC
also AB + BC > AC, AC + BC > AB, and AB + AC > BC
