Responsibility Contract

Procedures for Learning Activities Introduction (3 minutes) This week we are going to be talking about what it means to be a good citizen and some of the rights and responsibilities that citizens have in the United States. We are going to start today by watching a short BrainPop video! Instructional strategies (25 minutes) Pause video at 1:28- Citizens help their communities. We live in a community. Can you think of something you could do to help your community? Pause video at 2:00- everyone has the responsibility to be a good citizen? A responsibility is something you should do. Who can give me an example of a responsibility that you have at school? Pause video at 3:20- A right is a freedom that is protected. We have the right to be safe at school but its our responsibility to follow the rules. Can you give me an example of another right you have at school? We are going to finish watching the rest of the BrainPop another day but I want to make a list of things you can do to help each other at school. Do you think helping people at school is part of being a good citizen? Ok, so lets brainstorm some ideas.

Ashley Wellner

Everyone is going to get a chance to sign this list and I am going to put it up in our classroom. Hopefully this will help you remember and maybe give you some ideas of how you can be a good citizen in our classroom. Now these are ways that you can be respectful and help be responsible for the people in your classroom, but what about at home? How can we show responsibility, self-reliance, and self-discipline at home? ( Let students give responses) I am going to give you a responsibility contract. It says Dear ______, In school we have been learning about being responsible, showing self discipline, and having self reliance. Being responsible means that I am being trusted to do my.. what? What goes there? Showing self-discipline is doing the _____ thing. Doing the? Right, yes the right thing. Even though it might not be my ________ thing. Who can guess what word goes there? Favorite! Yes even though it might not be my favorite thing. Having selfreliance means doing things all by _____. All by what? All by myself! Then this part says, Student fills this out. It says I want to show responsibility, self-discipline, and self-reliance at home. I will do this by____________. And there is a space for you to draw a picture. On the other side, your parent (mom or dad) or someone you live with that is an adult fills this side out. It says tell me about a way YOU would like for me to show responsibility, self discipline, and self reliance at home.

Ashley Wellner __________________. So mom or dad or whoever, gets to think of something they want you to do at home to show youre a good citizen. Then you can write it down and draw a picture. At the bottom there is a place for you to sign and for your parent to sign. This is a contract, which means it is an agreement for you to do these things by signing this paper. This is your homework tonight!

Summary (2 minutes) So today we talked about what a citizen is and some rights and responsibilities that citizens of the United States have. We also made a list of things that we as citizens can do to help our friends in school. Tomorrow we are going to talk more about what it means to be a good citizen. Connections At the beginning of the year we made a promise as a class with things that we would do everyday at school. These are responsibilities that we agreed we would practice in our classroom. We are going to be making a different list of ways we can help each other and agree that we are going to try and use these ideas everyday. Assessment The informative assessment that will be used in this lesson will be informal questioning during the BrainPop Jr. video and during the making of the list of ways to help each other in the classroom. I will be looking for comprehension of the words; responsibility, right, community, and citizen. Differentiation This lesson will be suitable for diverse learners as a video will be used for visual and auditory learners and the production of an interactive whole class list will benefit kinesthetic, linguistic, and interpersonal learners.

Ashley Wellner Pre-cut fabric squares for Citizenship Quilt Being A Good Citizen Book By: Adrian Vigliano Glue

Procedures for Learning Activities Introduction (2 minutes) Yesterday we described what makes a person a good citizen. We also talked about rights and responsibilities. So today we will expand on what actions good citizens perform and we will be making a good citizenship quilt together! Instructional strategies (40 minutes) Raise your hand if you can give me an example of someone showing good citizenship. (Taking turns, sharing, completing classroom chores, taking care of ones things, respecting what belongs to others, being honest, practicing self-control, or being kind to others.) First I want to read you a book called Being A Good Citizen. This book will give you some ideas for what we are going to do next so pay attention! I want you to take out your writing journal. Think about something you can do to be a good citizen. I want you to write in as much detail as you can, an explanation of what you can do, how, and why. When you are finished I am going to give you a piece of fabric. Each of you is going to draw a detailed picture of one of the example you wrote about on this fabric. You will draw your picture on one of these precut fabric squares with fabric markers so that we can put everyones picture together to make it into a classroom quilt! When everyone is done with his or her drawing we will share. Now that everyone is done, bring your fabric square to the carpet and we will sit in a circle and go around and share. Once you tell us about your picture, you may come and put it in the middle and put glue around the edges so all our pieces will stick together once everyone has shared and we will have our quilt!

Summary (1 minutes) Can someone share what a friend wrote about and drew as an example of being a good citizen? Connections Not only did you describe one way to be a good citizen in your writing and

Ashley Wellner drawing your fabric, you were also being a good citizen by working together, being respectful, and kind to each other. You were also showing responsibility by getting your work done in a timely fashion and doing the job you were asked to do! Great job everyone! Assessment The informative assessment that will be used in this lesson will be the students individual drawing of an example of good citizenship and their writing about it. Differentiation Visual-Spatial Benefit from the activity of drawing an act of good citizenship. Bodily/Kinesthetic Benefit from actively putting together the class quilt. Auditory Benefit from the read aloud. Interpersonal Benefit from interacting with others as a team to put together the quilt. Intrapersonal Benefit from the individual task of creating a drawing of an example of a good citizen and writing about it. Linguistic Benefit from being able to write about their drawing in the writing prompt. Logical/Mathematical- Benefit from using logic to piece the quilt together.

Lesson #3- Wednesday
Math Incorporation
Essential Question/s

Ashley Wellner 1. 2. 3. 4. What is voting? Who can vote? Why is voting such an important part of being a US citizen? How does voting work?

NCSS THEME Civic Ideals and Practices VA Standards of learning Civics SOL 2.10 -The student will explain the responsibilities of a good citizen, with emphasis on c) Taking part in the voting process when making classroom decisions Probability and Statistics Focus: Applications of Data 2.17 The student will use data from experiments to construct picture graphs, pictographs, and bar graphs.

Objectives Students will make a choice and vote on it. Materials for Learning Activities Used by the students: - Ballot Cards - Ballot box - Pretzels Used by the teacher: BrainPop Jr. Video- Rights and Responsibilities Start at 3:22 and stop when finished I voted stickers Ballot box Ballot cards Pretzels: Cheddar Twists, Sourdough, Butter Snaps, Pretzel Sticks, and Mini Pretzels Pretzel Election Tasting Mats

Ashley Wellner Procedures for Learning Activities Introduction (10 minutes) Hold up ballot box. Ask the students what they think it is and what it is used for (casting votes). What is voting? Why is voting such an important part of being a US citizen? Tell the students that this is a ballot box. Explain the history of voting in the US (how we used to vote). Discuss that one of the rights of being a US citizen is having the right to vote in an election. Voting is one way of expressing your feelings about something. Instructional strategies (25 minutes) Ask students for ideas about how else we could hold a vote (other than using a ballot). Electronically (we can vote for things online), by holding up our hands, by recording it on the Smart Board, etc. Practice taking fun votes in various ways: vote for vote for favorite ice cream (If you like chocolate ice cream stand up, if you like vanilla ice cream stay sitting). Watch the BrainPop video about Voting. Introduce the Pretzel Election. Tell the students that they will choose a specific type of pretzel to be our class snack. You may put it out for treats, snack time, parent/teacher conferences, etc. So its VERY important for them to pick their absolute FAVORITE onenot to just vote for what their friends vote for. In order to hold a proper election, the students need to meet the candidates. Display the posters and hand out samples of each type of pretzel. Ok, it is time for you to make a decision about what type of pretzel you want as our classroom snack. I am going to give you your ballot when its your turn and I want you to check the box with your favorite type of pretzel. How many boxes do you get to check? Yes, only one. After everyone has voted, I will take the ballots out and we will see which pretzel won! Have students stand in a line and one by one assist them while they cast their ballot. When you go to a voting poll and vote on something you get a sticker that says I voted so that you can show you voted and be proud of it! So Im going to give you an I voted sticker! Give each student an I voted sticker after they complete their ballot. Once everyone has voted, have students sit on the carpet and take the

Ashley Wellner votes out one by one and make a tally chart for the different pretzel candidates. Share results of the election (Which pretzel got the most votes? Which one got the least votes?). Discuss how students could graph the results. Give students the choice of making a picture graphs, pictographs, or bar graph of the results for a homework assignment.

Summary (2 minutes) So today we learned about voting! You all got to be a part of a vote by deciding what kind of pretzel we want to have as our classroom snack. We learned that voting is an important right of all citizens in the United States. Connections Voting is an important part of being a good citizen. Assessment Observe students during class participation. Ask questions to make sure students grasp the concepts and only cast one vote. Making an accurate graph of the results of the pretzel election.

Differentiation Visual-Spatial reading a graph/giving students a choice to make a pictograph for homework. Bodily/Kinesthetic Using the body effectively to show students different ways of voting. Interpersonal - Interacting with their peers during discussions. Intrapersonal Having the opportunity to be independent and make their own choice when voting. Linguistic - using words effectively when having class discussions and watching the BrainPop video. Logical Mathematical- Have the opportunity to make their own graph.

Procedures for Learning Activities Introduction (3 minutes) - To start our social studies lesson today we will go on a virtual field trip! That means we are going to go on a field trip in our classroom! - This field trip is going to help us understand that good citizens have many qualities not just one. They do a lot of different things to become a good citizen. Instructional strategies (25 minutes) - So in our virtual field trip, we saw examples of people being what? - Today we are going to make a "good citizen" trail mix. - Have you ever had trail mix before? What is in it? Is it all just one kind of snack or are there a few different foods in it? - Can you think of a reason why we might want to make a good citizen trail mix instead of. Just having good citizen goldfish? - Thats right! Good citizens have many different qualities. So we are going to make a mix of snacks that could represent a good citizen. - This week, we have been practicing being good citizens so I thought it would be fun if we made a good citizen trail mix to help celebrate ways we can be a good citizen. - Citizens are responsible, honest, courageous, kind, respectful, and fair. We know that to be a good citizen, a person needs to have all of these qualities. - What we have to do is measure out each type of snack. - I have created this poster with different amounts - I have six different types of snacks. I have goldfish (which will represent fairness), pretzels (for honesty), popcorn (for respect), cheez-its (for responsibility), Chex (for courage), and M&Ms (for kindness). - We are going to take turns adding the different ingredients to the big bowl

12

Ashley Wellner I brought and then we can eat the trail mix for snack today!

Summary (2 minutes) Today we emphasized that it takes many different qualities to make a good citizen. Connections Did you think the trail mix was better than just eating one of the snacks by itself? Assessment The informative assessment that will be used in this lesson will be informal questioning during the virtual field trip and during the making of the good citizen trail mix. Differentiation Visual-Spatial By using physical imagery with the trail mix these learners will enjoy watching the trail mix be put together. Bodily/Kinesthetic This type of learner will benefit from physically getting up and scooping the ingredients into the bowl helping create the good citizen trail mix. Auditory- These learners will benefit from the whole group discussion about the virtual field trip and good citizenship trail mix. Interpersonal - Interacting with others as a whole group. Intrapersonal Will benefit from the time spent on the carpet listening to the teacher walk students through the virtual field trip. Linguistic Benefit from listening to the teacher talk and answering questions during class discussion. Logical/Mathematical- Benefit from measuring out ingredients for trail mix.
