Challenge:

Create Pompeii in a day

The class has been selected to create a low budget special effects video. You must create Pompeii the volcano wiping out the model city of Pompeii and its inhabitants. The fastest volcano to cover the city wins the publishing rights of your film to our website.
The Essence:

CHEMICAL REACTION RATES Reaction Rates can vary due to many parameters, some important ones are: Concentration surface area solvents ionic strength electromagnetic radiation intensity of light catalyst

Parameters: Every group of 2 will be given the same amount of sodium iodide: 1tsp hydrogen peroxide: 8oz. Dish soap 1 oz The chemical reaction of these 2 will be your lava. This will not be given out until filming! Like the pros you have one shot at this. One day for creation, one day for filming. The same villagers and model city, 1 figurines and 3 building, will be used for each filming. They will be placed 2ft from the mouth of your chemical reaction volcano, volcano should not be greater than 3 feet in diameter. Each chemical reaction will be filmed outside, quickest reaction times covering the first villager and building will be published film makers. Each group will submit at completion of the project, their reasoning of what reaction rate parameters they chose to focus on, why, and how they worked them into their volcano design. The appearance of the volcano does not matter, just the rate in which it erupts! Materials: Per Group of 2 The entire contents of the schools recycling bin, plastic jugs, bottles Access to art supplies Duct tape of various designs Yard stick/rulers for design size limitation Film day- 1oz dish soap, 1 tsp sodium iodide, 8 oz hydrogen peroxide. Hints: Given the list of reaction rate parameters, research online for more information.
