Husain Alqallaf Professor Fuentes English 1101 English I have been studying English for thirteen years since

first grade. In school, I learned how to read and write in English, and I learned a few grammar rules as well. However, since my teachers were not native speakers I didnt gain many speaking skills. Besides school, I attended a private institute where I developed my speaking abilities. The reason behind my improvement in speaking was because the teachers at the institute were Americans; watching movies in English has also helped me with accents. Last year, I started studying English as a second language at the ELTI on campus (UNCC). The people at ELTI corrected a lot of problems with my English. For example, I didnt know that English essay writing has special rules and formatting. The problem I face every time I read something in English is misunderstanding the meaning of certain words, or I do not understand at all. Also I cannot pronounce some of the words, so I never volunteer to read English when in front of other people. Furthermore, I have three basic problems with English in writing spelling, and grammar; it takes a lot of time for me to write an essay. I spend a lot of time trying to correct my mistakes, as well as doing a lot of thinking and researching for the essay. Despite these efforts, it is still possible to receive a bad grade, thus I worry about this class. Nevertheless, I have decided to overcome my fears and work hard to pass this class with an A.
