LESSON PLAN TEMPLATE Session 1 Tutor: Shawntel Davis Tutee: Arwin Jennings Grade Level: 4th Reading Level:

: Unknown Lesson #: 1

Evaluation/Reflection from last lesson: N/A Goals for the session: My goals for this session are to: Better get to know Arwin Assess his attitude towards reading Determine his spelling stage with the Elementary Spelling Inventory Introduce initial sentences for the CRI Book share

Rationale: This will be my second encounter with Arwin. When we met last week I informally asked him about his general interests. I am looking forward to using the interest inventory to better understand his likes and dislikes. Arwins teacher did not really give me a clue as to what reading level he is at. So this should give me better insight to his spelling and reading levels with the ESI and the CRI. I have several books for Arwin to choose from this week. Common Core Standard(s): Rationale/Purpose(s) (Why is it important to do this?

Assessment (Interest/Attitude) 20 min

[What will you do and how? List procedures and materials]

I will be giving Arwin the Interest survey first from Flint and Cooter. I will ask him all 23 questions on the inventory if time permits. I will record his answers on my copy of the inventory. Then I will give him the Garfield Elementary Attitude Reading Survey (Mckenna and Kear). I will be sure to explain what the pictures mean and add my own personal answers to relax Arwin.

The purpose of the interest Inventory is to gather information about students background knowledge, interests and motivation. This helps to assist teachers in aligning instructional materials to fit students strengths needs and abilities. (Cooter, Flynt & Cooter, 2007) The Garfield Reading Survey will show me Arwins feelings about reading.

Elementary Spelling Inventory 10 min

I will explain to Arwin that he is helping me with my homework by taking a spelling test. I will tell him that he is not getting graded in this assignment but I want him to try his best.

The Elementary Spelling Inventory helps to determine the students knowledge of key spelling features that relate to the different spelling stages. (Words Their Way) The results from the ESI will help me to plan future lessons that target Arwins weakness in particular spelling stages. Rationale/Purpose(s) (Why is it important to do this?

Informal Reading Inventory (Cooter, Flynt & Cooter) 10min

[What will you do and how? List procedures and materials]:

I will explain to Arwin that I want him to read the sentences aloud to me to the best of his ability. The initial passage selection is on pg. 185. Once Arwin has made two or more mistakes I will ask him to stop reading. Depending on where he stops I will plan to continue with that passage for my next lesson.

I am very interested in this portion of the lesson because I really want to know what level Arwin is at so I can pick level appropriate books for book share. It is also important to find books at his level so that he will be able to understand and comprehend whatever book he is reading.

Writing Assessment 10 min

I will ask Arwin to write on a piece of paper that I will provide to him. I will give him the following prompt: Imagine that a ball rolled to a stop at you feet. When you picked it up it felt very warm and it glowed. Then suddenly... Describe what happened next.

I wanted Arwin to write something a little bit different. I need to see how far a can push him creatively. This prompt isnt really something he would write about in school so I think that it makes it fun. This will also give me better insight to his writing level.

Book Sharing 10 min

I have checked out several books from the library based on the interest questions I asked him last week. I have 6 books for him to choose from. We will read together at the end of the lesson.

The books that I chose are all at fourth grade level. These books may be a little difficult for Arwin. However, I think it is important for him to see what fourth grade level books are like. These books are great for shared reading.
