Emmanuel Bazemore Composition 101 R.

Cooper November 26, 2013 Power Power is the ability or right to control people or things, Political of a country or area, a person or organization that has a lot of control and influence over other people or organizations. This definition of power is from the Webster dictionary. Power is a one of a kind, it destroys everything in its path, and it corrupts peoples mines or clouds their judgment. It something that mankind will never get past, because once you have power you always want more. Power is what everyone wants and usually when you want power you will do anything to get as history has shown. For example, men like alexander the great whom basically conquered almost the entire known world during his time. When alexander had taken the throne he had anyone who challenged him killed. Anyone who got in his way of conquest was killed. Another example is Adolf Hitler who wanted to conqueror the whole world and create the perfect society. Coming from Christian point of view the root of all evil is pride. When you have power, pride kicks in and you believe that nothing can stop you. Pride always comes before the fall of man. Through out history power is what every man seeks, because if you have power you have control and if you have control you can influence the mass. For example, Hitler wanted power and he believed that his race was the superior race. So committed genocide against the Jews and tried to create a super race that consisted of blondes with blue eyes. Hitler with his power influenced other nations such as Japan and Italy and made them believe that they were

the superior race and should be the leaders of the new world. Power has its effect on everyone, according to Thomas Hobbes, Power in society is a palpable force that affects us all in many different ways at large scale and at small. It appears in many different guises but is essentially the same looming force that can spoil our day, ruin our plans, destroy our careers and even kill us. An immense effort of lies, deception and propaganda (literally bullshit) misrepresent the beast and make it appear benign when it is not, or belittle its virtue when it is benign. People like Foucault saw power as, a complex strategic situation in a given society social setting. This brings to mind a Utopian society, what is a Utopian Society? For many years people have had there own point of view on a perfect society. What they all can agree on is that it would be a safe and perfect society for all mankind. A Utopian Society in my opinion is a society that safe in all aspects of life, there be peace throughout the land and the government would only exist to keep order and protect the society. The definition of Utopia is a community or society possessing highly desirable or perfect qualities. If you were to look at society today you would see that, its not perfect or in any way share or form peaceful. Most Government around the world is either corrupt or wanting to control society more than it should. There is also, another type of power is territory. When we look at this world every animal and being has its own territory and are willing to fight for there territory. If they lose this territory they fallen prey to a higher power. Whoever has the most habitable land has the most power. According to the law of many lands, including Britain and the USA, land is treated as a commodity that can be bought and sold. It is regarded as a reliable asset that retains its relative value when other commodities and money are in flux. It is therefore a means of storing wealth, which is a means of storing power even over a period of many

generations - provided the laws are not changed. Power comes in many different shapes and forms but in the end power consumes us all because of our innate human nature. How do we get through this consumption of power? According to Thomas Hobbes, Everyone who shares the normal innate responses of our species can empathize with their reasons for doing so. But the more you understand the techniques of power, the more you are able to escape from them. Knowledge not just any generalized knowledge from an encyclopedia, but specific knowledge about the origins, purposes, structure and mechanics of social power - may make you free.
