Syllabus Survey thoughts/reflections: While going through the survey I was thinking about my education growing up. Often times Social studies was a dull experience (filled with pirate worksheets); however I was blessed with a few good teachers that could tell me the story of our past, which I always found interesting. Still, I do not believe enough teachers put enough emphasis on thinking skills, like must subjects I believe it is easy to go in with the concept of this is what you have to learn, remember it for the test. I believe this is sad, because our education has become a place where students learn how to pass, but leave the school with no knowledge of how to live in the real world. Look at all the words youve selected and look at the section as a whole. Now pick out three words that you think best summarize or encapsulate the whole section. Beliefs Practices Transform Compose a sentence using those three words. Our practices as we teach influence our beliefs; however we need to be willing to transform our methods to best serve our students. Reading Strategy: 3 word combo A look Back Purpose of Education

Why were you there in general? What about at the course level (SS)? I was in school because I had to. The government made me. Social studies was time when teachers could just hand us textbooks and worksheets, that way they could sit at their desks and get their work done. Nature of the Learner How were you viewed as a student? Quiet=better students Person and Offices of the Teacher Why were some teachers meaningful? Why not? Ms. Campington she was nice to all her students. High school, I cant remember their names, however they challenged me, and taught me as much as they could. It was in high school that I actually began to learn. In middle schools, I had two teachers that would teach and they were meant to teach different subjects while connecting them. They would bash each other in front of students. One teacher stopped me in middle school to ask me if everything was okay. Learning Process What were the common instructional methods? Books Worksheets Lecture Powerpoint Conceptualization of the Subject Matter Compartmentalized? Useful and relevant to life? Economic: trial experience Economic: Real life finances. Sacred/Secular dichotomized? Religion was never mention, I went to public school Use of knowledge did you do things with new knowledge or did you just intellectually work with it, master it and move on?
