Husain Alqallaf Professor Fuentes ENGL 1101 Discussion Discussion is split into two types: the first type

is discussing a topic that you are familiar with, and the second type is discussing a topic that you are not knowledgeable of. In both types of discussions you can learn about new information and ideas, and share your own way of thinking. First of all, discussion is an argument or exchange of ideas that occurs between two or more people about any topic. The purpose of a discussion is to convince another to agree with your opinion, or to listen/be convinced of anothers opinion. Brainstorming and discussing ideas can helpful when writing about a serious topic. Discussing your topic which you will write about will help you to get new ideas and thoughts about what you are writing. For example, I used to be a student in the ELTI, and I wrote an argument which was my last essay in the ELTI. I sat with one of my friends in my apartment, and we discussed the topic which I wanted to write about; he gave me new ideas and thoughts from his view which helped me a lot in my essay. Even though I did not agree with some of his opinions, the discussion helped me to complete my essay. Secondly, discussing a topic that you are unfamiliar with is harder than discussing a topic that you already know about. In other words, when a person is discussing a new topic that he does not have knowledge about, he may be convinced by the other person he argues with; however, discussion will help him to become more informed about the topic, and it will increase his thoughts and ideas. A persons opinion may eventually become stronger because he will have his own thoughts on the topic.

Finally, sometimes it is better if a person does not speak about something that he does not know; however being a part of discussion, even if just listening in, can help a person answer the questions they may have on their mind.
