Personal Statement

Having been introduced to the Optometry program at a young age by a distant family -friend, I was always attracted to the flexible hours and financial stability that this field has to offer. These features are especially important to me because I aspire to attend an art college and pursue my ultimate goal of becoming a designer after I finish getting a true education and attain a career that will support me financially. I am the first child in my family to attend college and my parents are immigrants from Vietnam, so economic stability and education have always been an important priority. In high school, I had the opportunity of being in the Aice program where I had the opportunity to study Physics and Math courses adopted from Cambridge. Im just starting my first year of my undergraduate career, but I found my exposure to science and math in my earlier education was exceedingly beneficial introduction to chemistry course. Also in my high school years, I rebuilt my schools key cub that was inactive for five years by recruited more members then the club has ever gotten, reconstructed the policies so that the club would stay active, planned more challenging and engaging events, and brought the club to a state wide level where we could broaden our knowledge and ideas of helping the community. While I am pursuing my chemistry degree, I still go back to my high school to make sure everything is still running smoothly. As I get further in my undergraduate career, I hope to obtain a bachelors in chemistry that would get me into an Optometry program. I also aspire volunteer at a local marine science lab to do optical research on marine life. I am also applying for a Berkeleys summer pre-optometry program. At the same time, I want to volunteer at local charity art shows and apply for art based scholarships to help pay for my education while not losing sight and interests in art. As for long-term goals, I hope to make it as a successful artist in the future and open up my own fashion business. However, even then, my masters in Optometry will still still be valuable to me and I dont believe I will ever drop my career in the science field just because I no longer need to be economically stable. Although chemistry is not what Im particularly passionate about, I believe having a dream goal at the end of the road will motivate me to continually broaden to my education of the sciences and eagerness to do more than whats demanded in a chemistry degree. My devotion to be a successful artist will always be the fuel to my determination to succeed in my science courses.
