Early Childhood Special Education Lesson Plan

Teacher Candidate: Salisha Shears Grade Level: Kindergarten Lesson: Parts of a plant and the things it needs to grow Unit of Study: Plants Goal of Lesson (Common Core State Standards/Division of Early Childhood where appropriate) Teach CCLA.SL.K.6 - Speak audibly and express thoughts, feelings, and ideas clearly. SC.K.N.1.4 - Observe and create a visual representation of an object which includes its major features. SC.K.N.1.5 - Recognize that learning can come from careful observation. Objectives: Students will be able to identify and recreate parts of a plant and what it needs to grow. Pre-Assessment: Beginning of lesson Show students a plant and ask 1- Do you know what this is? 2-Ask students to explain what it is. Post-Assessment: Students will be able to recreate and label parts of a plant and what it needs to grow Materials: Plants, soil, paper, glue, crayons Use of Technology: N/A Differentiation: Please see below attachment Seating Configuration/Use of Physical Space: Large group on rug for lesson Students will sit at assigned desks for re-creation of flowers Students will return to rug for close Teaching roles and collaboration: Cooperating teachers will help re-direct students as needed. Cooperating teachers will go around room to assist students with identifying plant parts and prompting students to place plant parts in the correct position Classroom Management: Students will be reminded of the class rules. Students will be prompted to raise a quiet hand & wait their turn to answer questions as

needed. Students will be praised for following rules. Engagement of students/anticipatory set/Motivation: Students will be encouraged to ask and answer questions. Connection to Previous lesson/Prior Knowledge: Students will be asked to explain what they know about plants Lesson Presentation: Estimated Time: Approx. 15 min Show students a real plant and ask if they know what it is, and ask what they know about it. Is a plant a living thing? Explain that each part of the plant has a job Show students seeds and (ask for their input) and explain what it is used for Show students the roots (ask for their input) and explain that the roots grow underground and hold the plant into the soil. They take in water from the soil. Show students the stem (ask for their input) and explain that the stem take water and nutrients to all of the other parts of the plant. Show students the leaves (ask for their input) and explain that leaves take in sunlight and air to store food for the plant. Show students the flower (ask for their input) and explain that the flowers help the plant make seeds and fruit Explain that plants need water, air and sunlight in order to grow Guided Practice/Active Involvement/Small group work/Independent Practice: Estimated Time: Approx. 20 min Teacher will model how to create and label the parts and needs of a plant Students will be asked to return to their desks to construct and label their own plants Final Summary/Closure: Estimated Time: Approx. 10 min 1- Dress student up as a plant (have students participate in what part goes next while transforming a student into a plant) or 2- Have students share and identify the parts of their plant (art work) Extension: Teach students the plant part song
