On a cold November in 1906, Its 7 am on a Monday morning.

Im walking to work ignoring the fact that theres a heavy cold wind rushing through my face. As I head towards work I can start imagining the things i will see, hear and smell. I get inside the factory and I can start smelling the co-workers covered in poop and urine. Its disgusting and Im surprised I can stand these unpleasant smells. Going inside where all us the workers worked gave me chills. These factories have horrible conditions. Just imagining who will get hurt is horrifying. There were some incidents where workers will get pushed right into the machines mixing with the meat, how disgusting. Others will get fingers chopped off as well, there was too much commotion when this happened it terrified me. In my opinion the worst thing ive seen here was how the meat would go so bad, the workers had to add chemicals to the meat to remove the rotting smell. I was so startled, i didnt know people are cruel to pack unhealthy meat. This is basically my daily life for now and who knows how longer more. The Meat Inspection Act of 1906 was so desperately needed because the rotten meat was being disguised with chemicals making it unhealthy for us to eat. Another reason was because rats were kept in the meat which meant they were mixed together with the other meat. Although food safety was in bad conditions before it doesnt mean that there isnt any problems today. In the article 100 Years Later, the Food Industry Is Still The Jungle, author Adam Cohen argues that the spinach contamination in 2006 killed three and injured more than 200 in 26 states. Although spinach has nothing to do with meat, its still important for all food to be healthy primarily because we eat it. Immigration has made many changes in fast food menus weather its a bread or a sauce or even a drink. Before all of the mixing of menus, the typical American meal was basically bread, meat, and potatoes. Then immigration began and fast food restaurants began selling food that had to do with the immigrant's culture. For example, according to the menu posted at www.mcdonalds.com the Fruit N Yogurt Parfait was originated from Canada. The premium Mc Wrap Chicken and Bacon (Crispy) was originated in Mexico. The steak, egg and cheese bagel came from Poland. Lastly, the cinnamon melt from McDonalds came from Europe. In the menu posted at www.jackinthebox.com the tacos came from Mexico. The egg rolls originally come from china. In www.bk.com the breakfast croissant was an idea from the French and the oatmeal came from Scottish. Eric Schlosser writes in Fast Food Nation that in the Unites States more than half million people became sick after eating eggs that contained salmonella. Schlosser also mentions that roughly 37,000 Americans suffer food poisoning from E. Coli. We might live in a time where food is taken more care of and its made sure its safe for us to eat, but its not 100% effective. Schlosser made it clear that there are still some issues with food and it might not be too safe either. According to the book Fast Food Nation, Schlossers suggestion for improvement on food safety is that Congress should create a single food agency that has sufficient authority to protect the publics health. (264) In the research article titled Impact of Internet Posting of Restaurant Scores on Critical Violations, authors A. Blake Waters et.al. describe that critical violations decreased significantly after grades were being post digitally. There has been a cause where foodborne disease was affecting many people. When this problem was posted online many fast food restaurants became to take action and remove this problem because they didnt want to look bad and not get any customers. Waters explained than in Los Angeles, California, 20% hospital

admissions decreased after implementation of restaurant window posting inspection scores. Posting health inspections in the web helped make the restaurants a better and cleaner for consumers. On the day of the observation, my partners and I decided to observe LA County Regulations numbers 33, 60, 51, 66 and 63-65. Regulation 33 has to do with employees not eating, drinking, or smoking in any work areas. As we were observing we didnt seem to spot anyone doing any of this. Regulation 60 has to do with the cleanliness of restrooms and the way it functions. My partner Jerry observed the mens restroom and Naomi and I observed the womens. Jerry mentioned that the restroom was in good and clean conditions. Although, the womens restroom wasnt the best. It was not that clean and it had a unpleasant smell. Also when the toilet flushed, it flushed slow. Regulation 51 is basically if we see any wiping cloths near food contact. Unfortunately there wasnt any wiping cloths near food. Regulation 66 was followed as well; light was well protected just incase of any shattering. Last but not least regulation 63-65 had to do with the way things are runned in the restaurant and if everything is in good conditions. This regulation was passed as well. Burger King seemed to have a good job according to our observations. On October 9th, my partners and I decided to meet at Burger King. I remember being a rainy afternoon around 12:40 and we began observing the restaurant. We noticed that the Burger King we visited was nice, well attended, and clean. We noticed things were in order, employes were doing what they had to. There were no wiping cloths near food or found any unpleasant odor. Although, the same cloth that was used to clean tables was used to clean the trays. While we were there, I happened to spot an employee who was serving fries and he had no gloves. While he was serving the fries into the box some fries touched his hand which I found disgusting. My partner noticed that food trays were dirty and full with food crumbs. Employees in this fast food restaurant were nice and were patient while ordering. They werent rude or took long to give the food. The restroom conditions in this restaurant had good and bad conditions. One of the good conditions was that in both men and womens restroom there was a big sign that mentioned Employees must wash hands. Both restrooms had enough toilet paper and Another positive thing was that there were no wet spots anywhere and even though if there were to be one, they had a wet floor sign just incase. The bad conditions had to do with the womens restroom. When you entered it had an unpleasant smell. It was also dirty and the when the toilet flushed it ran slow. Lastly, according to my partner Jerry, the mens restroom had both hot and cold water and when i checked the women's restroom there was only cold water. Schlosser suggests in Fast Food Nation that the consumer is responsible for their own health and safety when he writes Nobody in the United States is forced to buy fast food.(268). We buy fast food not because were forced to but because we want to. We see all that good food being shown on tv that makes us hungry, but lazy to make something to eat at home. We dont really see how bad fast food is bad for us that we eat it and get sick of it later on. Were basically risking ourselves to those teenagers who make our food . Schlossers opinion on how we can protect ourselves is basically to stop buying it. (288) If we stop we wont be getting be risking ourselves just because a burger called our name. Knowing where you want to go eat and weather if its a nice place or not can be difficult to know. Many people have different opinions to different kinds of food. Some might like it others

might be disgusted and it might not always be helpful much. Although knowing friends that like the same kind of fast food like you might be a helpful source to know where youre going will be good or not. One good way to know where youre going to eat is safe or not is to visit the LA County food safety regulations website. Another good resource is to visit the restaurants website or go to websites such as www.yelp.com where people write down what they thought on their visit to the restaurant. Throughout my experience at Burger King, in my opinion, I think you should eat there, but eat at the one thats located by Hubbard and Glenoaks Blvd. Its a really nice, clean place, even people wrote on www.yelp.com that it was a good place to go eat. Its grade letter is an A and so was the previous one. Although they have a few issues it can be fixed and make this Burger King look good. They had no flies, there were a few dirty tables but they were cleaned a while later. This Burger King seems to be following the regulations pretty well, although some things are off its all good for now. Its a safe friendly environment and I honestly will continue eating there.
