December 4, 2013 To the family of Danya, It has been my pleasure to work with Danya during ten weekly tutoring

sessions this fall !s her reading and writing tutor, I ha"e found that she really en#oys reading and was engaged in e"ery acti"ity that we did Danya was ready to learn each time that we met and always came in with a smile$ I used se"eral assessments with Danya for the purpose of determining reading and writing le"els to better help me in planning effecti"e lessons for our time together The following are two of the assessments that helped in that process, along with an e%planation of how I used them &riting !ssessment'The purpose of this assessment is to help me learn what Danya can do in terms of writing This includes sentence structure, grammar, spelling and punctuation (rom this I was able to tell that I needed to work on the writing process with her )*I' The purpose of this assessment is to determine Danya+s reading le"el, as well as her comprehension of a te%t This assessment showed me that Danya was reading at #ust below 4th grade le"el and that we needed to work on comprehension of te%t to understand the author+s purpose ,ne of the strategies that we worked closely on was the writing process (or this I had Danya make a digital (lat -tella that she was able to send on ad"entures using the i.ad To begin I had Danya write down places that she would like to see her (lat -tella go on each lesson Danya then wrote about the ad"entures after seeing where her (lat -tella went The end product was a summary of the ad"entures that her (lat -tella went on during our sessions &e worked on her rough drafts to fi% punctuation and spelling and in the end Danya was able to use the computer to type her final draft Danya was always e%cited to see what places her (lat -tella "isited and she showed great progress in her writing towards the end !nother strategy that we worked on was Danya+s fluency when reading To do this I used the i.ad, which had an application that pro"ided se"eral different passages that Danya could read aloud !t the end of the passage there were three comprehension /uestions for her to answer This helped Danya become more fluent when reading and more comfortable with reading out loud -he mentioned at our first meeting that she did not en#oy reading in front of the class (rom the graphs of her words per minute, Danya impro"ed each time that she read a selection This was great not only for her fluency, but also for her comprehension The better she was with reading aloud her scores for comprehension went up also Throughout our sessions together I noticed that Danya was beginning to comprehend the stories that we read together with greater detail !t first it was only a few details about the story and by the end she was able to tell me a really great summary of the book To document this I had Danya write in a #ournal, which I included in her portfolio that she took home Danya has really progressed in the short time that we had together -ome ways to help at home to continue this growth would be pro"iding opportunities to read e"ery night Danya lo"es to read, especially if the books are about princesses or fantasies 0a"ing Danya tell you about what she has read is also a great way to promote comprehension and help her to remember and share something interesting and fun that she has read It was really great to get to know Danya, I know that she will do great this year Thanks for allowing me the pleasure to help -incerely,
