Running Head: PHILOSOPHY OF EDUCATION

Philosophy of Education Sherman, Jennifer Instructor: Dr. Egbert Education 201: Foundations of Education 9:30

PHILOSOPHY OF EDUCATION Philosophy of Education Education is a lot like a softball team, every persons role is different, but is equally important to the success of the team. Without every person giving their best effort, it can be hard to succeed. In softball, each player has their role, as well as the coaches, the umpires, and even the parents that take part in the success of the team. In education you have the students as well as the teachers, the principal, and the parents and each one of them is going to be a part of each persons success in education. The philosophy in the book that best describes my personality is the progressivism philosophy. There are aspects within that philosophy that are pertinent such as the emphasis on solving real-world problems as well as the emphasis on developing students completely as possible physically, emotionally, intellectually, and socially.

According to my philosophical beliefs all schools should teach curriculum that is going to prepare our students for the real-world. This would allow our students to have better problem solving skills. The progressivism philosophy states that the curriculum should be composed of experiences applicable in todays world. The teachers role is to be caring individuals and use questioning and discussion to guide students through the world and its meaning according to the progressivism philosophy. This means the teachers can give the students a better understanding of situations that they might experience throughout their lives. However, the students role is to be active participants in their education which is clearly obvious from the progressivism philosophy. I learn best by actively participating in the task at hand. I have discovered certain concepts about my learning styles, such as I am more of a kinesthetic learner than an auditory

PHILOSOPHY OF EDUCATION learner. Subject material should be taught using the kinesthetic approach. This should be partially decided by the student, due to their interests and partially by the teacher, due to his/her curriculum. This is stated in the progressivism philosophy. Having your own philosophy is important because it can help guide you through important and difficult decisions. It gives you reasonings to go along with your decisions. Therefore, the progressivism philosophy is important to the governance of my life.
