Title: Teaching Hunter Safety Education Experience Date: Spring 2011 Description: During the spring of 2011, I was

certified as a Hunter Safety Education Instructor and taught a Hunter Safety Education course. I taught the class with a few other certified instructors. Although I am legally certified to teach hunter safety to any student over the age of ten, the particular course I instructed had students in the age range of 16 to 26. There were 15 students participating. The course met on Monday nights for three hours during a 6 week period. While instructing the class about hunter safety, I made a serious effort to keep the classroom environment manageable, comfortable, and engaging for everyone. I found that in most cases, it is easier for students to grasp a concept in an active learning environment. Included is a copy of my Hunter Safety Instructor Certification. Alignment Wisconsin Teacher Standard Alignment: This artifact best aligns with Standard Five: Environment, of the Wisconsin Teacher Licensure Standards. Standard Five states that the instructor uses an understanding of individual and group motivation and behavior to create a learning environment that encourages positive social interaction, active engagement in learning, and self-motivation. My Hunter Safety Education Instructor experience best aligns with Standard Five of the Wisconsin Teacher Standards because I was able to learn from this experience, as well as from others, how to manage a classroom properly in order to achieve the preeminent educational experience. This course also provided me personal growth and confidence in not only my communication as an educator, but also in my ability to control a classroom environment. I learned that communicating through more than one way is most effective. For example, I stated the steps to sighting in a bow, wrote the steps on a whiteboard, and physically demonstrated each step. I found that communicating through these multiple approaches encouraged students to be actively involved. Communicating in multiple approaches also caught more students attention, especially when I included them in the demonstration in which also encouraged them to be actively engaged in the lesson. This experience will further prepare me for teaching my own classroom. I encouraged positive social interaction among the students by grouping students together in teams to complete a task such as assembling a tree stand. I also encouraged individual motivation among students by having each student participate in target practice. Each student had an opportunity to practice at a target with a bow. If the student hit the bulls eye on the target, they were rewarded an archers ribbon. I found these exercises to be motivational and successful among students. As a result of my experience, I am better equipped to achieve appropriate classroom management. I am glad I took advantage of this outstanding opportunity.

UW-Platteville School of Education Knowledge, Skill, and Disposition Statement Alignment: This experience best aligns with KSD2.b of the UWP School of Education Knowledge Skill, and Disposition statements which states: The candidate can create a classroom environment that establishes and maintains high expectations for all students to value content of course work, take pride in work by initiating improvements, and help peers. During my experience teaching Hunter Safety, I found that some students did not comprehend information as quickly as others. However, with help from other peers in the class, as well as different approaches such as hands on learning and group work, the students improved. Ultimately the classroom participants learned and grew together. This was an excellent example of how students can learn from other students. Also, when students have their part in a group, such as reading the compass, they take pride in their work and look for ways to initiate improvements and help their group members.

Personal Reflection: What I learned about teaching/learning from this experience. I learned that teaching is more productive when a classroom is managed properly. When a classroom has an established culture for learning, education has no limits. I also learned that when a teacher, speaker, or student has a positive and comfortable environment, the classroom is a more enjoyable place. I came to understand that organizing the classroom space properly, managing classroom procedures, and engaging students in everything that is being taught, makes for a learning environment that has a positive outcome for everyone. What I learned about myself as a prospective educator as a result of this experience. I learned that teaching can be an incredibly enjoyable experience. This is especially true when I have a strong background in a particular subject that I have a passion for. I also learned that teaching can be very enjoyable when the classroom environment is under control. I find satisfaction in teaching my students how to be actively engaged in what they are learning. I truly believe that social interaction between the teacher and student, and the student and his/her peers is exceedingly important in the classroom learning environment. I consider this important because it is simply communication. It is incredible how much learning can take place when people communicate amongst themselves, especially when trying to solve a problem. As a result of this experience, I learned that teaching does not have to be just another life-long job, but with the right management, skills, and attitude, it can become an enjoyable career.
