SLEEP ?

How the body rests During periods of sleep, the body does not respond to stimuli as it does when awake
Sleep is a physiological state: o There is a need for periodic sleep

All humans need sleep

WHAT CAUSES SLEEP?

Hormones are the triggers for a state of sleep o There are cues in the body that trigger the hormones. o There are also forces within the environment that trigger sleep. o Certain foods and medicines can hamper or induce sleep

WHY DO WE SLEEP?

WHAT ARE STAGES OF SLEEP?

o Stages of sleep are the depth of someones sleep. o There are four stages of sleep that are within the NREM sleep.
What is NREM sleep? o It is called Non -rapid eye movement sleep.

Stage 1 Stage 2 Stage 3 REM

NREM STAGES

Stage 1This is the stage between being awake and sleeping. WHAT HAPPENS: o Eye movements slow down o Involuntary twitches (hypnic jerks)
Stage 2Half of our sleep occurs during this stage. WHAT HAPPENS: o Heart rate and breathing rate slow o Eye movements stop o A person can be easily awakened o It is rare to dream.

NREM STAGES

Stages Three and Four sometimes only called Stage Three. WHAT HAPPENS: o Dreaming occurs in this stage. o Although there is dreaming, there is less than in REM sleep

REM SLEEP

What is REM sleep?


o Known as Rapid Eye Movement sleep.

o It occurs about 25% of the time that a person sleeps.


o The eyes are in a state of rapid movement or twitching

SLEEP CYCLE

WHY IS SLEEP IMPORTANT?

o Sleep is vital for learning and memory


o It also helps the brain process new information(called memory consolidation) o Studies have shown that people who learn new material and then sleep will retain the material better

o It is an important part of maintaining weight and keeping metabolism healthy


o It also allows for processing of carbohydrates and monitoring of hormone levels

SLEEP DEPRIVATION

o Sleep deprivation is very serious because the body needs sleep in order to maintain healthy brain function.
o If sleep deprivation is extreme, it can even cause death

HOW MUCH SLEEP IS NEEDED?

13-19 years old 20 + years old

needs 11-13 hours of sleep needs 9-11 hours of sleep


needs 9-10 hours of sleep needs 7-8 hours of sleep

Sleep guidelines vary on weight, height, and lifestyle.
