PLEASE DONT FEED THE MODELS ANALYSIS Visual Analysis of Please Dont Feed the Models The image that will be analyzed through this paper comes from the web-page of an organization called About-face.org. The elements that will be analyzed in the image are those of pathos, logos and ethos, which are rhetorical elements. The audience towards who this image is directed, the purpose and message of the image will also be mentioned. To facilitate the readers understanding of the image, follows a brief

description of it. The image portrays models in different poses inside a rectangular box with bars and two wheels. The author may be suggesting that the models are part of an exhibit in some circus. Besides the image itself, a couple of phrases are written on it. This phrases are PLEASE DONT FEED THE MODELS, and STOP STARVATION IMAGERY CREATE AN ABOUT FACE: DONT FALL FOR THE MEDIA CIRCUS. Purpose In this image the author is implying that models are part of the media circus and that beauty is not equal to a models image. The main purpose that the author wants to transmit in this image is that girls should not look like models. A models image is not perfect, it is not how girls need to look. With the phrases in the image the author may be trying to support this idea. The two phrases in the image are against the idea that everyone should look like the models portrayed in the media. By the phrase DONT FEED THE MODELS, the author may be implying that society must stop feeding the idea that models on the media are a perfect role model for girls to follow. Also, with this phrase the author may be expressing the idea that models should look more realistic and natural.

PLEASE DONT FEED THE MODELS ANALYSIS Audience The image is related to self-image, media, and the idea of beauty. Since this image can be found in the web-page from an organization the audience most likely will be those who enter this website. To end up in this website people will be researching about body image, health issues, agencies who help people to be comfortable with their body, and how to be aware of their own bodies. Audience will be mostly young women ranging from the ages of thirteen to eighteen. Also, young boys, parents, and other people who are interested in this area. And, maybe even some women who are in the media industry, like models. Ethos The element of ethos in this image is clear and precise. Since the image comes from an agency, and the name of this agency is written in the image people can relate both of them. This agency is much related to self-image and the media. The agency

About-face, is recognized in the United States, and since their name is on the image and people know the name, ethos is present. The models inside the cage in the circus can be the author interpretation of how self-image is controlled by the media, and on how is important to break this concept. Logos The logic in this image may be present for those who know the subject to which it refers. If people do not know that this image is anti-media body image, people may not understand the meaning of the phrases and the models portrayed as if they were inside a

PLEASE DONT FEED THE MODELS ANALYSIS cage. For those who know the agency that created this image, and who know what the image is about, logic is present. The image itself presents models as part of the circus,

and basically the whole point the author wants to make is for people to understand that the models on the media should not be portrayed as beautiful and role models for girls. In this image models are confined and people should not tell girls to look like them. The image and the phrases on it make sense together for those who know the topic to which they are directed. The image and phrases on it are clear, the media is a circus, do not play a role in the show. Pathos Emotional appeal is the most used in this image. Since the image targets a different audience, the reactions within this audience may differ from each other. For example for the girls, from ages thirteen to eighteen, who see the image it may make them feel shock, surprised, and free. This is because at the moment they see this image, which by the way in which the author expressed it, it may look really impacting, girls would not want to be in the place of the models. The models are portrayed as bad influence. For this reason, girls may feel free to look different from them. In contrast, if models who are involved with the media see this, they may feel angry or even depressed. Because they are portrayed as animals in a circus, as if they are exhibits. Depressed because modeling is their lifestyle and this image is kind of telling, do not go that way, it does not bring good things. This image is implying that look like a model will only serve for you to fall into this media-circus show. Also, if parents see this image, they will feel anguished about their daughters. They will not want their daughters to look and

PLEASE DONT FEED THE MODELS ANALYSIS to be like the models in the image, parents will want their daughters to be healthy and happy. Models are inside a cage, as exhibits in a circus instead of being in commercials and TV. This image makes people, especially girls question if models they see on media are really good role models. The pathos, logos, and ethos in the image, all go into the same direction. They all try to make teenage girls to do not encourage the idea that a nice and perfect body is the same as one of a model. The purpose of the image is

effective by planting the idea in an emotional and logical way. People who see this image will start questioning whether models on media are actually good role models.
