Competency D Effective communication and collaboration with students, parents and community members to support student learning As students

complete formative and summative assessments, I use the stars and stairs method in order to provide students with feedback. In the stars section, students are given comments on things that he or she has done proficiently. In the stairs section, I communicate to students on how he or she can improve a skill. The students respond well to stars and stairs because the method gives them an opportunity to monitor their own learning while giving them goals and areas to improve. On Tuesdays, I send home Tuesday folders. Within the Tuesday folders I place formative and summative assessments as well as a parent/teacher communication log. The log gives me an opportunity to write notes home to the parents as needed. The parents are also given an opportunity to contact me if they have any questions or concerns. By observing the stars and stairs portion on formative and summative assessments, parents can also monitor how students are doing with specific objectives that are being covered in class. The stairs portion also lets parents know what he or she can be working on with their child at home.
