Systemic Theory
By 1955 less than 10% of breast cancer-inflicted women had a mastectomy. Novel therapies such as hormone treatments, surgeries or biological therapies, were developing. Mammography was also developed for early detection. Scientists isolated the gene that caused breast cancer: BRCA 1, BRCA 2, and ATM. 1955: George Crile Bernard Fisher, MD, is recognized today for his groundbreaking research in breast cancer, which ultimately ended the standard practice of performing the Halsted radical mastectomy, a treatment that had been in place for more than 75 years.
