Date: 14-15 November 2013 Teacher: Darryl Plummer Course Name: Geography Unit: Europe Lesson: Review for

Unit Test Total Estimated Time: Two 51 Minute Class Periods

Overview: This lesson will not address CDE Geography standards directly as it is time for students to prepare for the test. It will address them indirectly because students will be forced to review content related to all the objectives in order to prepare for the test. I will however not be giving the lesson on any of these objectives. Instead, my lesson will focus on 21st century skills and how to prepare for a test.

Standards: No state standards

21st Century Skills: 1. Life and career skills a. Initiative and self direction b. Productivity and accountability Daily Objectives: Students will be able to (SWBAT) Prepare a study sheet that accurately reflects what will be on the Unit Test.

Preparation: Student handouts printed

Materials: Student handouts

Pre-Assessment:

None given. Anticipatory Set: Students are well aware that there will be a test at the beginning of next week. I will start the day by telling them I will do everything I can to prepare them for test. I will also announce that they can use a study sheet on the test. Connection to previous learning or life: Students have not yet taken a written test in this class. Although I think they are all familiar with written tests, I will re-iterate that we have not done something like this so far in the class and that this is a big scary test. Agenda for the Board: Will be written on the board: Schedule on back white board Front board used to review concepts if needed

Instruction/Activity Day 1 1. I will hand out the Unit Test study sheet. 2. I will use students to hand back all assignments from the unit to be used as study materials. 3. I will inform students that they can use this sheet with any notes they write on it, on the test. I will make it very clear that students must use this sheet, and only this sheet, to write on. They may not staple or glue things to it. They may not print onto it. They must write or draw everything they want to use on the test on this sheet. 4. I will briefly go over the study sheet. 5. I will show an example study sheet from the senior government class to give students an idea of what it might look like. The study sheet I will use as an example is extremely impressive. The entire sheet, on both sides, is filled up with extremely small writing. From a distance of more than 2 feet it looks like a blob, but up close there are extremely detailed notes. My hope is that this will sufficiently impress students and give them an idea on what is possible with a study sheet. 6. I will inform students I have posted all lecture slides and any other materials we have used during the unit online on the class website (https://sites.google.com/a/weldre5j.org/robert-bbrinker/about-our-class/advanced-world-geography). I will guide students to the webpage in case they have forgotten how. All students in this class have IPADs so can view the materials. 7. I will inform students that the Unit Pre-Test, European Notes Quiz, and Vocab/Mapping Quizzes are excellent resources to use to study. I will hand back the Unit Pre-Test so students can use it.

8. I will tell students that I am available if they need clarification on any concepts or have any questions. I will not answer questions about what is on the test. Day 2 1. This time will be devoted entirely to filling out study sheets. 2. It is a Friday, so I suspect some students will be rowdy. I want students to be able to share ideas and ask each other questions, but if it gets out of hand, I will institute a no talking rule. I may also use the threat of taking points off the Unit Test. 3. I will answer any questions students have. If a question repeatedly comes up, I will do a mini lesson for the entire class.

Closure: I will advise students to study over the weekend and specifically on Sunday night. I will remind them that if they lose their study sheet, they will not be able to use a different sheet on the test. Post Assessment: I do not directly assess this lesson. However, how well students do on the Unit Test will to some degree be a reflection of how well they did on this lesson.

Potential Modifications: 1. I could give only 1 day to study for the test. I did not in this case so that students could finish their final drafts and because it will likely take 10-15 minutes to hand out all their work from the unit to be used as study materials. 2. Using the study sheet on the Unit Test is optional. I let students use it to motivate students and teach them good study habits. 3. The study sheet could be more detailed.
