I-3. Explain whole group instruction, small group instruction, and independent work time.

Whole group instruction is useful for delivering information to the children when differentiated instruction is not overwhelmingly needed. For example the teacher can use this type of instruction when introducing vocabulary words or a read-aloud. In the example of vocabulary words, after the teacher has introduced the words to the students, the teacher then can use differentiated instruction to help them understand the words.

Small group instruction is when the students are formed into smaller groups (2-6). Small groups can give the teacher the opportunity to work closer with students that are having trouble. Small groups are also used to put students with peers that share some sort of commonality, such as learning ability.

Independent work time is a time when students are to work on their own. During this time, the instructor has the opportunity to confer with the students individually and address specific concerns. This time is also good when the children are completing work that is to be used for assessment.
