Lab - The Effects of Exercise on Cellular Respiration

BACKGROUND INFORMATION Bromothymol blue is a chemical indicator that changes color as the pH of a solution changes. It is yellow in acidic solutions and blue in basic and neutral solutions. When carbon dioxide is dissolved in water, it creates carbonic acid, pH~5.7. One of the products of cellular respiration is carbon dioxide. As cells produce CO2 in cellular respiration, it is carried by our blood cells to our lungs where it is exhaled. You can measure the rate your cells carry out cellular respiration by measuring how quickly you produce carbon dioxide. ACTIVITY Using the given materials and guidelines, your group will design an experiment that compares rates of respiration between different forms of exercise. At the end of the experiment, you will be presenting your results to the class. MATERIALS - Stopwatch - 3 drinking straws - 50 mL Bromothymol blue solution - 3-250 mL beakers - Graduated cylinder - Jump rope (if adequate space in class or hall) - Test tube rack - 6 test tubes - Safety goggles GUIDELINES - You must be creative and have fun! - You must examine 2 or 3 different forms of exercise - You must wear safety goggles when handling or blowing into bromothymol blue solutions - You must have a control (an experimental condition that acts as a standard to compare with your changes in the variable) - You must produce quantitative data - You cannot do any exercises that will disrupt or endanger yourself, another group, or anyone in the school - Each bromothymol blue solution to be tested should contain 5 mL of bromothymol blue and 40 mL of water. - Do not pour bromothymol blue down the sink In your group, use the guidelines above to discuss how you would like to test the relationship between exercise and the bromothymol blue reaction. Consider what the bromothymol blue color change is indicating, and form a hypothesis based off of your desired experiment. What sort of results do you expect? Detail each step of how you conduct your experiment. You will be defending your approach and results to the class, so think critically prior to beginning!

HYPOTHESIS

EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE
All steps in the procedure are fully detailed Student roles in each step are clearly defined 2 to 3 forms of exercise are tested Quantitative data can be collected from this experiment Experimental control

Conduct your experiment according to the procedure outlined above. If you make modifications as the lab progresses, please take note and be prepared to defend your modifications to the class. DATA
All quantitative results have been collected and recorded Qualitative changes have been noted Any modifications to the procedure have been noted

Use your accumulated data to form a quantitative result from your experiment. Develop a way to represent this data in a graphic and accurate manner to present to the class. DATA ANALYSIS
Trends or relationships in data have been identified Quantitative data has been used to prove or disprove hypothesis Analyzed data has been depicted in graphic form

Give a thoughtful critique of your experimental procedure. Consider the following questions What were some sources of error in your experiment? Was it easier or more difficult than expected? How did the results match your expected outcome? A local exercise science lab is interested in hiring your group to examine the effects of exercise on cellular respiration. How would you modify your lab for this consultation?

CONCLUSIONS

Read through the presentation rubric carefully and use your recorded procedure, results, and conclusions to form a 3-4 minute presentation on the experiment conducted by your group.
