Lesson One: The Cha Cha Slide

Standards: ELD: Listen actively to spoken English in a range of social and academic contexts.
Content: -Perform line dance -Cardiovascular fitness -Participates, appreciates, enjoys rhythmic movements

Theme: Rhythmical Movements and Activities Lesson Topic: Line Dancing Objectives:
Language:Students will be able to comprehend the simple verbal commands that are being given to them. Content: The students will be able to successfully perform the dance, The Chacha Slide, the song while in rhythm with the song.

Learning Strategies: -Direct instruction -demonsration -scaffolding -repetition -kinestetic Key Vocabulary: -hop -right -left -foot -stomp -slide -cha cha -backwrds -knees -freeze Materials: Stereo and iPod with the correct songs on it. Motivation: -Student involvement -Increased interaction Presentation: 1. Review simple locomotor movements like hopping
2. Introduce nonlocomotor movements like stomping your feet 3. Go over advanced moves like the cha cha and charlie brown. 4. Play a game similar to simon says calling out the dance move and the class repeats it

Practice/Application: Try performing the moves to the music X2-3. Review and have students partner up and take turns assessin
moves. I will test the class on performing the dance moves correctly without music then with music

Review/Assessment:We will perform the song together as a big group at least twice before breaking up
into partners.

Lesson Two: Achy Breaky Heart

Content: -Perform line dance -Cardiovascular fitness -Participates, appreciates, enjoys rhythmic movements

Theme: Rhythmical Movements and Activities

Lesson Topic: Line Dancing

Objectives:
Language: Students will be able to comprehend the verbal commands being given to them.

Content: The students will be able to perform the line dance to the song Achy Breaky Heart in rhythm with the song.

Learning Strategies: Direct instruction; scaffolding; repetiion; small groups and partners

Key Vocabulary: line dance; walk; step; forward; backward; kick

Materials: music player; mp3 or cd with the song Achy Breaky Heart on it.

Motivation: Student involvement; student interaction

Presentation: First, we will practice the steps to the dance one at a time. The steps are as follows:
-Begin at home with feet together -Step right, touch left, step left, touch right repeat for eight counts total -Walk backward 4: r,l,r, touch left for four counts -Rock back and forth slowly: step forward l, touch r, step backward r touch l, and step forward left, touch right for six counts -Kick right forward, and do a quarter turn on left foot for two counts -Repeat sequence until the end of the song, each time facing a new direction.

Practice/Application: Students will practice with the entire class and with teacher, then split off into
partners and test their partners on the dance steps. Then we will reconvene to see if they can perform the dance without my help and stay in rhythm to the music

Review/Assessment: Students will use the handout of steps to assess their partners ability to perform
the dance. I will use teacher observation as a final assessment of the performance of the dance.

Lesson Three: Jump Rope


Standards: ELD: Listen actively to spoken English in a range of social and
academic contexts. Content: -Turn and jump over a rope -Cardiovascular fitness -Participates, appreciates, enjoys rhythmic movements

Theme: Rhythmical activities

Lesson Topic: Jump Rope

Objectives:
Language: Students will be able to comprehend the verbal commands being given to them.

Content: Students will be able to successfully be able to turn and jump over a short jump rope.

Learning Strategies: Demonstration, scaffolding, peer partners,


kinesthetic activities, modeling

Key Vocabulary: swing; turn; jump; feet; behind; forward; heels; toes;
jump rope; fast; slow, hop

Materials: 60-70 individual jump ropes

Motivation: This activity will have high intrinsic value. I will encourage the
students to try and get the most consecutive successful jumps they possibly can. After each attempt, they will try to beat their high score or even someone elses high score!

Presentation: First, I will demonstrate the various steps involved in using


an individual jump rope which includes the follow points: -Start with the rope at your heels. The rope should be behind you. -Swing the rope forward over your head. -When you see the rope hit the ground, jump with both feet! -When you jump, be sure to keep swinging the rope so that you go over the rope instead of landing on top of it. -If you successfully jump over the rope, keep turning the rope and swing it over your head.

All of the students will have their own jump rope and will follow along a I demonstrate the actions.

Practice/Application: Students will practice amongst themselves for the


majority of the time. They will be encouraged to watch other individuals who seem to have a firm grasp on the concepts or if they have a firm grasp of the concepts they can assist those having a more difficult time.

Review/Assessment: We will have the students partner up for the


assessment with a sheet of paper and a pencil. One partner will jump rope and the other will count the jumps. The jumper will get to jump rope for an entire minute. The counter will count the entire number of jumps the jumper gets and write it down. The partners then switch and repeat the process. We will then do the same assessment later in the week or later in the year and compare results. Hopefully, every student will be able to beat their previous score!

Lesson Four: Just Dance

Content: -Perform line dance -Cardiovascular fitness -Participates, appreciates, enjoys rhythmic movements

Theme: Rhythmical Movements and Activities

Lesson Topic: Dancing by using the Wii game Just Dance

Objectives:
Language: Students will be able to comprehend the verbal commands being given to them.

Content: Students will be able to mirror the on screen dancer in rhythm to the music.

Learning Strategies: Demonstration; modeling;

Key Vocabulary: Mirroring; rhythm; participation; Just Dance; copying; opposite; left; right

Materials: Nintendo Wii system; 4 controllers; 1 Just Dance game; 1 projector; 1 speaker

Motivation: The students will be motivated to have a turn using the Wii remote and actually play the
game, Just Dance. In order to have a turn holding the remote, they must be participating and following along when they are not holding the remote.

Presentation: First, we will go over some of the vocabulary and the procedures of playing Just Dance
in PE. Then, the majority of the class period will be playing the game and trying to do as many different songs as possible.

Practice/Application: All of the students will be in the PE room. The Wii will be hooked up to a
projector and a speaker to play the music for the game. Everyone will face the projection. Four students will be selected to stand on the polyspots and hold a remote. The class will then follow along to a song that I have selected. After each song, the students holding the remotes will get to each pick one new person to hold the remote for the next song.

Review/Assessment: Teacher observation and a written assessment asking the students to define
the following vocabulary words: mirror, rhythm, copying, and participation.

The final lesson plan for the unit will be a written assessment. Once students have completed the assessment, they are welcome to practice their jump roping skills.
