THERMAL ENGINEERING - II
(Mechanical Engineering)
Time: 3 hours Max Marks: 80
Answer any FIVE Questions
All Questions carry equal marks
?????

1. (a) Classify the boilers based on contents of the tube and the axis of the shell.
(b) What are the unique features of high pressure boilers and briefly explain.
Mention the advantages of high pressure boilers. [6+10]

2. (a) Explain various types of nozzles.

(b) Dry saturated steam enters a steam nozzle at pressure of 12 Bar and is dis-
charged at a pressure of 1.5 Bar and dryness fraction 0.95. What will be the
final velocity of steam? Neglect initial velocity. If 12% of heat drop is lost in
friction. find the percentage reduction in the final velocity. [6+10]

3. (a) What are the reasons for inefficiency in surface condenser?

(b) A surface condenser is designed to handle 10,000 Kg of steam per hour. The
steam enters at 0.08 Bar and 0.9 dryness and the condensate leaves at cor-
responding saturation temperature .The pressure is constant through out the
condenser. Estimate the cooling water flow rate per hour, f the cooling water
temp. Rise is limited to 100 C. [6+10]

4. The following data relates to a single stage impulse turbine,

Steam velocity=600m/s
Blade speed=250m/s
Nozzle angle=200
Blade outlet angle=250
Neglecting the effect of friction, calculate the work developed by the turbine for
the steam flow rate of 20kg/s. Also calculate the axial thrust on the bearings.
[16]

5. (a) What do you mean by compounding of steam turbines? Discuss various meth-
ods of compounding steam turbines?
(b) Explain the difference between an impulse turbine and a reaction turbine?
[10+6]

6. (a) What are the advantages of closed cycle gas turbine over open cycle gas tur-
bine.
(b) With neat sketch explain the working of semi-closed cycle gas turbine plant.
(c) How can you improve the thermal efficiency of a gas turbine plant. [4+8+4]

7. (a) Define the following terms:

1 of 2
Code No: NR310303 NR
i. Thermal efficiency
ii. Overall efficiency
iii. Rocket propulsive efficiency
(b) Explain the significance of nozzle design criteria in jet propulsion. [12+4]

8. Discuss the theory of the rocket engine. [16]
