is grams per mole. You can get each element from the periodic table, which includes atomic weights, and for a molecule, add up the weights of all the atoms in the chemical formula. Potassium is 39.0983 g/mol (39.10 is a good rounded value, or even 39, for many applications) Equivalence is based on the moles of electrons gained or lost in the ionized form from a mole of the substance. Since potassium has a valence of +1, moles and eqvs are identical. For something with a valence of +2 like calcium, one mole would be two eqv. So 39.10 mg = 1 mmol = 1 mEq. The relationship is generally unique for each substance and has to be computed from atomic weights, and valence observed in chemical reactions. ex: Going by what was said above, 40 mEq must be equal to 40 mmol, as potassium has a valency of +1. One mole of potassium would weigh 39.10 grams. So 40 mmol would weigh 1.564 grams. 40 mEq = 40 mmol = 1.6 grams, rounding off. 1 mole = atomic wt in grams 1 mmole = atomic weight in mg mEq = (mg X valence)/atomic weight mg= (mEq X atomic weight)/valence
