Bruce English 360 Conference 2: Portfolio Preparation

What to Bring: o This worksheet, completed (also upload it to Titanium) o Any documents youre considering including in your portfolio.

Questions: 1. As you can see on our Portfolio Instruction Sheet (available on Titanium), each students portfolio must include one fully revised, major assignment (resume, job cover letter, memo, instruction manual, OR iFixit edit). Review your work and my comments on these assignments. Which of these documents are you most interested in revising, and why? Which of our student learning outcomes (see page one of our syllabus) could you satisfy by revising this document (and yes, it can satisfy more than one)? Where will you have to focus your revision efforts to produce a document that will satisfy your standards? The document I am most interested in revising is my resume. The reason I chose to revise my resume is because I feel like I will get more use out of this document. Although it was a class assignment, it is also a document I can go ahead and use to apply for jobs now and in the future. I believe the resume will cover SLO numbers 1, 3, 5, and 6. I believe I will have to focus most of my revisions on the cover letter portion of my resume. As well as do a few minor revisions to the format and alignment of my resume. 2. Your portfolio team should meet to discuss which major assignment each of you intends to revise. First, each student should pitch their assignment choice to their peers, arguing for its ability to satisfy our SLOs and stating your purpose in revising this document instead of one of the others. Below, summarize your peers comments and suggestions about your choice. Do they agree or disagree with you, and why? How did they advise you? Which SLOs do your peers think your chosen assignment will satisfy? What kinds of revisions do they suggest? My peers believe that my choice to use my resume as my major assignment is a good idea. They too will be using their resumes as their major project. In addition to my resume, I will be using a portion of my group memo to demonstrate my ability to properly cite references. Aida stated the following, "I too am going to use the resume as my main project so I believe it is a great fit. Also the memo is a great piece to include as well in addressing your ability to properly cite resources. I think I am going to use my resume for the big project. I think this targets SLO 1, 3, and 6". Below is the entire Google transcription we used to communicte for our portfolios. Google Transcription: "These are the listed SLOs in which she would like us to hit for our Portfolio

1. Write formally and informally, in-class and out-of-class, for a variety of audiences and purposes. 2. Find, evaluate, select, synthesize, organize, ethically cite, and present information from a variety of sources appropriate to their disciplines. 3. Organize ones thoughts and communicate them clearly and persuasively to address a rhetorical situation. 4. Recognize, evaluate, and employ the features and contexts of language and design that express and influence meaning and that demonstrate sensitivity to gender and cultural differences. 5. Improve ones own and others writing skills through the assessment and critique of written works. 6. Employ a robust, recursive writing process, including pre-writing, drafting, and revision. We can use this for #2 on the conference prep sheet. Present what you want to fix, why, how, blah blah blah. Then we can all input our responses then write it down for the prep sheet :D Lizbeth: Sounds good! I'll post mine later tonight. Lizbeth: Hey guys, soooo idk what else I'm supposed to tell you other than I think I'm going to use my resume for the big project, plus a section from the group memo that shows some citation. What do you girls think? That should cover all the SLOs right? Let me know what you think! : ) Aida: I too am going to use the resume as my main project so I believe it is a great fit. Also the memo is a great piece to include as well in addressing your ability to properly cite resources. (= Aida: I think I am going to use my resume for the big project. I think this targets SLO 1,3 and 6. For SLOs 2 and 4 I was thinking about including a portion of the instruction manual on performing self breast examinations. Lastly I was thinking of including a section of the ifixit document. Please let me know what you ladies think =) Lizbeth: sounds good! Aida are you just using the ifixit assignment as an extra? or what SLOs are you trying to satisfy? Amanda: Sorry for lagging guys! I havent been home :/ Anywho, Im gonna be using my memo, thennn for like some extra stuff, Im going to be using my friends resume that I edited :D Lizbeth: Same here, sorry my sister was in town over break so I didn't have much time to be on here. So yeah like we said in the conference I'm using my job resume for my main piece, a section of my memo to show my citing knowledge or ability, and this as my informal writing piece. I'll be more on top of communicating on here now. Let me know if you guys need me to look over anything for you!

Aida: Hey ladies just wanted to check in and see how you guys are coming along with your portfolios? Lizbeth: I think I'm doing alright. I just have a few questions, are you using word or weebly for your portfolios? And also, I probably asked this already but I can't remember...do we need to turn in Dr. Bruce's graded copy and the peer reviews for the main piece? Or for all the pieces, or not at all? Lizbeth: Hey girls, I mentioned it to Aida but I am going to switch my portfolio around. I am now doing the Memo as my main piece. I am no longer using the resume because I thought that would include the resume's cover letter but it does not. I am still including this conference prep sheet. I am also going to include my peer review sheets for the memo, as well as the selfevaluation for the memo. What do you think?"
