Maha Madani RHET 1320 May September 11, 2013 Purpose: To portray Graces writing process Format: First person Profile Audience: Reader Horton Writes About Who Ava Horton, also known as Grace Horton, is a writer living in a glass box of emotions. She writes from deep within her soul where words come together to form her stories. During the late night hours on August 29th 2013 Grace and I had the opportunity to bond over the process she takes to write a report. Talking with Grace, I learned that she prefers writing that allows her express herself rather than assignments that force her to focus on one subject with no bias included. Miss Hortons writing process usually begins with a written draft. This allows her the freedom to explore her mind as she pieces together the body of her paper. The written draft acts as a guide for the journey Grace must take to have an at least satisfactory final paper, although she wishes that all papers could be as close to perfection as possible. I noticed that as Grace recorded the words flowing from her mind she held her head up with her hand and her feet swung in the air because they didnt reach the ground. She also preferred to write at a desk because it caused her to remain stationary. I watched the paper as her right hand made the connections she needed to form the subject for each paragraph to be written. The tapping of her pencil against the brown desk seemed to boom in the silence as she paused to rethink her ideas. Music was allowed, but only after the thinking process was over.

When Grace is ready to type her final draft she plays music that will keep her motivated throughout the process. The music however varies depending on her mood during that day. When Grace is writing for an assignment she tries to find a connection from the prompt to her reality. Grace used a paper she had to write for Ethan Frome as an example. She stated that When my teacher last year made us right a paper over Ethan Frome I found a connection from the book to my life. I had been cheated on before just like the wife had, so I wrote about that. I find it easier to write assignments if I can somehow receive an emotional connection to it. She uses this technique as motivation to get the assignment finished in a timely manner. She believes that if it is emotionally striking it will be easier to become fully invested into the report. When Grace is not writing for an assignment she is writing to express her emotions. She finds herself putting words to paper to deal with problems that occur in her life, I usually find myself writing about my situations rather than talking about it. When I went through a bad breakup with my boyfriend the only way I could let out my feelings was through writing. I found myself writing until I had nothing more to say. Its easier to deal with things when my thoughts can be put on paper. Grace said that when an occurrence strikes her emotionally her first response is to record her feelings. This allows her to piece together her thoughts and approach the situation without

emotion clouding her judgment. Writing acts as a filter for her actions. After writing, she is usually able to approach the situation with a level head. Grace uses her emotions to become fully invested into her writings. She believes that writing without emotion holds one back from giving one hundred and ten percent. The emotions that play into Graces writing help aid in giving her a subject to focus on, without a main subject Grace feels lost when writing. A subject connected to emotion allows her to feel like she has control over the report. When she writes about a subject that she has no emotional connection to she feels as though the report is only half her efforts. Ava Grace Horton chooses to write with an emotional connection, she does not take short cuts, and challenges herself when it comes to writing a strong report. I wish that one day I will have to skills to write a well- written report or small personal journal entry filled with emotion like Grace does. She has a skill that many wish they had and remains modest about this masterful talent.
