UbD Lesson Plan Template Stage 1: Desired Results

Established Goals: Concept/ Themes: Change History of my family Families have a past and they change overtime; my family timeline illustrates my familys history 1.W.8. With guidance and support from adults, recall information from experiences or gather information from provided sources to answer a question.

Understandings: Students will understand that... Detail: a particular fact or piece of information about something or someone. Brainstorm: produce an idea or way of solving a problem by holding a spontaneous group discussion. Zoom in: examine closely; focus one's attention on When we zoom in on writing we must incorporate specific detail into our writing when we are recalling particular events.

Essential Question(s): How is the concept of zooming in related to the purpose of including detail in our writing? How can we use brainstorming as a tool to assist in the development of our ideas?

Students will know. How to zoom in on a specific event that expresses an aspect of culture or traditional practice. Incorporate specific detail into a piece of writing or drawing. Use descriptive adjectives to recall life events in detail. Brainstorm using a web to generate ideas about which event in their lifetime they want to zoom in on.

Students will be able to. Zoom in on a specific event that expresses an aspect of their culture and traditional practice by incorporating specific detail into

their writing. Identify descriptive adjectives in a text that provide detail about a specific event or character in a text. Understand what it means to zoom in on an event in their lifetime that resembles their cultural practices.

Stage 2: Assessment Evidence

Performance Tasks: Students will be asked to use the attached web Other Evidence: to brainstorm ideas about a cultural event they would like to zoom in on. Once they have brainstormed their ideas they will be asked to use the corresponding sheet to bullet point specific details about all of the events they have listed. Whichever event they can be most specific about and provide the most details for, will be the event they choose to zoom in on. Following this lesson the students will be composing a written piece on their chosen topic. Differentiation: A. Enrichment: Students who are intellectually advanced will be asked to brainstorm and choose TWO specific events they would like to zoom in on that correlate with one another. They can compare and contrast the events and discuss why one was more favorable to the other and how the two events were similar and/or different. Student must provide 5-8 specific details about the event. B. Below Average: Below average students will be asked to brainstorm using a graphic organizer. Once they have chosen their idea to focus in on, they will be asked to draw their idea/event and provide at least three specific details about the event. C. English Language Learners: ELL students will be asked to brainstorm using a graphic organizer. Once they have chosen their idea to focus in on, they will be asked to draw their

idea/event and provide key words along the border of their picture that elaborate on the detail of their picture.

Stage 3: Learning Plan

Learning Activities: Having previously read a story on culture, students will be familiar with what culture is and how different types of families celebrate different types of traditions. I will facilitate a grand conversation and ask students to pick out moments from the story where a character zoomed in on a special tradition or event of their culture. The students will converse with me about the specific event and point out specific details about the event. Example: What happened, who was involved, what time of day it was, where it occurredetc. After talking about a specific event from the story, we will go over what the word detail means and how it relates to the concept of zooming in Once the students have grasped the connection I will ask them to think about their own lives and own traditional cultures. Specific events that have occurred in their lives and stand out in their minds. I will give the students the brainstorm web and ask them to write out their ideas in the bubbles of the brainstorm web. Once they have complete the web they will be given the detail sheet. On the detail sheet the students will be asked to list SPECIFIC details about each event that they listed in their web. The sheet should help them narrow down which idea they intend to zoom in on. The idea the student provides the most detail for will be the idea the student chooses to zoom in on for their final writing composition assignment.
