2. Comments on teacher candidate's effectiveness of overall instruction, use of developmentally appropriate strategies, ability to lead the class, professionalism, attitudes, and demeanor throughout the period of observation:

This was a lesson on the planets. The class has several special education students, so the special education teacher was in the room for half the class. They coordinated well together. The students got out of their desks and demonstrated rotation and revolution of planets around the room. When discipline issues started, Mrs. Sawyer stopped all activity and had the students take a deep breath, which calmed them down. When the Promethean Board did not work, she switched to the doc camera. Students worked in groups to list characteristics of revolution, rotation and tilt. Select students were given a card with a planet. The students were asked to put the cards in order of distance from the sun. They had a mneumonic that helped. Another group of select students were asked to use the same cards to put the planets in order from smallest to largest. Mrs. Sawyer gave a mnuemonic for that as well. These were discussed and then the characteristics were transferred to a graphic organizer that the class worked on together. Handouts with planets were distributed and the students cut them out and were asked to glue them to a piece of paper in distance from the sun. This lesson had a variety of learning modalities. This was appropriate to the number of special education students. Mrs. Sawyer walked around during activities which prevented a lot of possible discipline problems. My only negative was that the lesson plan did not totally match what I saw. This was because the lesson was changed in the morning and there wasn't enough time to change the actual lesson plan.
