Introduction/Set Induction (10 minutes):

Prior to class: Designate four different learning stations and set them up with the decorative design samples and magazines. When the students arrive, direct them to get out a sheet of paper. Show the students pictures of structural vs. decorative design and have the students identify the differences.

Transition (5 minutes):
Pass out a card to each student. Divide them into four groups based on the card they received: diamonds, spades, hearts, and clubs. Pass out a worksheet to each student and assign each group to a different learning station.

Lesson Body (70 minutes): (Interior Design I, Mastery Learning Teaching Strategy)
Learning Stations: Each station focuses on a type of decorative design. Introduce the four different learning stations. The students will spend 6 minutes at each station. At each station, the students will complete a section of the worksheet. The students will write down characteristics of each type of decorative design and look through the magazines to find their own examples. Discussion: After each group has rotated through all of stations, direct the students to return to their desks. Lead a discussion based on the students observations from each learning station. Points to discuss: What are the main characteristics of each type of decorative design? Where might you use (geometric) design in decorating a space? What affect does each type of decorative design have on a space? What are the similarities/differences between each type of decorative design?

Portfolio Assignment: Look through magazines to find an example of each type of decorative design: naturalistic, conventional, geometric, and abstract. Mount each picture on a piece of construction paper and type up a reflection identifying where the design is found in the space and how it affects the feeling in the room. Mount reflection beneath the picture or on the back of the page, if necessary. Place the pictures in a page protector and add them to your portfolio. Finish as homework if needed.

Transition (3 minutes):
Direct the students to clean up all materials and get ready to go. Have students turn in bell ringer notes. Students will sit quietly in their desks until the bell rings.

Summary/Closure (2 minutes):
When students finish cleaning up, sum up the main learning points of the day. Encourage students to look for and identify different types of decorative design throughout the rest of the day.

Assessment/Evaluation:
Students will fill out a worksheet at each station to ensure participation. The worksheets will be turned in for participation points. Turn in bell ringer paper for participation points
