Information to read Butterflies have four different stages to their life cycle. Each stage serves a different purpose and the butterfly looks completely different. The change from stage to stage is called a "metamorphosis". The egg A butterfly starts life as very small, round or oval eggs; the female attaches the egg to leaves, stems, or other objects. Females lay a lot of eggs at once so that at least some of them survive. The larva/caterpillar When the eggs hatch, the caterpillars eat leaves in order to grow. It often has an interesting pattern of stripes or patches, and it may have spine-like hairs. It is the feeding and growth stage. As it grows, it sheds its skin four or more times so as to enclose its rapidly growing body. The cocoon/ pupa- transition stage When they have done growing and reached their full length and weight, they form themselves into a pupa or cocoon where the caterpillar is rapidly changing. The cocoon is the transformation stage within which the caterpillar tissues are broken down and the adult insect's structures are formed. The cocoon of most species is brown or green and blends into the background. Adult butterfly After the caterpillar has done all its forming and changing inside the pupa, the butterfly comes out with its wings folded against its body. When the butterfly has rested enough after coming out of the pupa, it will pump blood into the wings in order to get them working and flapping. After 3-4 hours, the butterfly will master flying then it will search for a mate and the cycle will start all over. What do butterflies eat?

As soon as the adult butterfly is formed, it switches on a juice diet. The butterfly drinks all kinds of sweet juices. Its mouth parts were transformed so that the butterfly can form a kind of straw with the mouth parts. These mouth parts are also called proboscis. The most known juice, that butterflies absorb, is nectar. Nectar is secreted by plants and contains a lot of sugars. It contains small amounts of protein, vitamins and various flavorings. Besides nectar, the butterfly also drinks juice of trees or fruit juice. Most adult butterflies live only one or two weeks, but some species hibernate during the winter and may live several months.
