Vargas 1 Evelyn Vargas English 114A Professor Payte 16 December 2013 Reflection Letter Throughout, this semester in my English

114A class with professor Payte, I learned so many great things. Work was always involved, for example we made 3 progression packets, which involved exercises along with it. The progression packets came with different themes, the first theme was about speeches the second was about advertising and the last progression was about themes in the book A Clockwork Orange by Burgess. The first progression packet was to write about speeches that we had to read and analyze them, we had to choose 2 of the 3 speeches and how they were both similar and how they were both different from each other. The exercises that consisted along with this essay were to write about the 3 essays individually and write about what they are trying to communicate to the reader. The other exercise was to write a letter to the author, which we could go against or in favor of what the speaker was trying to say. The last exercise in this packet was to write a letter to someone that would likely read this speech and tell them what the speeches were about and why the person should consider reading the speech. The other progression packet was all about advertisements. The first exercise was to get in groups and my group and I decided to go with the topic/theme of alcohol, we had to write several paragraphs about the commercial and about the pictures about the brands that we chose. The second exercise in this second progression packet was to analyze the picture or the commercial in a detailed way. We also had to analyze what the company/ brand tried to sell to

Vargas 2 their consumers and how they were doing it. The last exercise in this second progression packet was to get in groups and to make a PowerPoint to see how the companies advertised there products how they used the rhetorical strategies of logos, pathos, and ethos. They used logos, pathos, and ethos to change the consumers way of thinking so they can purchase their products. The last progression packet was to read a book, which in this case was A Clockwork Orange by Burgess and we have to get a theme out of that book. The exercise that came along with this progression packet was to get sources of the topic that we decide to talk about and make an annotated bibliography. The second exercise was to make a dialogue a brighter detail of what the source were all about. The last exercise was to make a proposal which included, what we were going to talk about and how we were going to write in the essay including sources, theme, etcAfter that if the teacher was all right about what we were going to write about if not she would deny it and we would have to change what the professor thought we needed to work on. Lastly, this class was all about the challenges in English Professor Payte, challenged each and every one of us because she knew we could do better than we were doing, we just needed her to push us a little more. If I had to grade myself I do not know what grade I would give myself, because I am not a Professor although I can say that I will pass this class because I have done everything and have turned in everything on time. Every time that I would get my essays back they would be filled of corrections that Professor Payte left on them because she knew this was not the best I could give but more! I just want to say thank you for Professor Payte support and time to help us (your students) succeed.
