Competency #1

Document Children s Behavior I have learned more about why I should document childrens behavior. By documenting childrens behaviors I have the potential to see patterns in their behaviors. Such as a child seems to have difficulty transitioning or at 11:45 am every day. By documenting these behaviors I and finding a pattern I am then better equipped to help the child and change my environment if needed. I can also use my finding to have a good basis for informing parents of concerns and achievements.

Competency #2
Explore the standards for quality early childhood education. Knowing the standards for quality early childhood education, help me to provide a high-quality environment for children. I need to work towards healthy and positive relationships to encourage a sense of worth for children and their families. My curriculum promotes learning and development in cognition, language, physical play and social-emotional areas. I use a variety of techniques when teaching and communicating with children. I am working towards continually assessing/documenting children and my environment. I have a very healthy and nutritious menu for children. I also talk to children about keeping themselves healthy. I need to understand child development so that I can communicate effectively with children and their families, and with co-workers (should the need arise). I also work with families to provide an anti-bias environment and curriculum. My environment is set up to provide safe and healthy opportunities for children to explore and discover. I have polices and procedures in place for parents and myself in avoid confusion and keep things consistent.

Competency #3
Explore strategies that support diversity and anti -bias perspectives. I understand that children can learn bias as early as age 3. It is my job to teach children and families that diversity is a good thing and welcome in my childcare. We talk about how we are all people but we may do things differently or celebrate different holidays or go to different churches or even look different. We have many posters depicting children from around the world. We have toy people from different cultures and backgrounds, age and ability. We have multicultural dolls and play food. As well as many books depicting children and adults in various activities and cultural backgrounds. We tell folk tales from other parts of the world as well. I also ask families about their cultural backgrounds so that I can better incorporate each childs culture into our daily lives and routines.

Competency #4

Implement activities developed by the co-op teacher/instructor/student. I have planned activities, using the activity plan provided by my instructor. I have planned and implemented a music, creative movement, process art, unique story, flannel board story and a story with a prop. I learned how to plan the concepts and skills I want to teach. As well as, correlate with the WI learning standards.

Competency #5
Demonstrate professional interpersonal skills with children and adults.

I use my interpersonal skills used to properly interact with children and their families. Interpersonal skills include everything from communication and active listening skills to attitude and deportment. Things like asking how their weekend went or how grandma & grandpa are, because I know they went to visit last night. The relationship I have with all my families is more like a friendship than a business relationship. I know the kids and their families on a very close level, all the while protecting their privacy.

Competency #6
Analyzing the guiding principles and the five developmental domains related to the WI Early Learning Standards. The guiding principles reflect a knowledge base in scientific research, our values, and our commitment to young children and families. There are 9 guiding principles, they are: Parents are childrens primary and most important caregivers and educators, All children are capable and competent, Early relationships matter, A childs early learning development is multi-dimensional, Expectations for children must be guided knowledge of child growth and development, children are individuals who develop at various rates, children are members of cultural groups that share developmental patterns, children exhibit a range of skills and competencies within any domain of development, and children learn through play and the active exploration of their environment. The 5 domains in the WI early learning standards are: health and physical development, social emotional development, language development and communication, approaches to learning, and cognition and general knowledge.

Competency #7
Integrate the WI Early Learning Standards into the program s teaching cycle (ongoing assessment, planning and curriculum goals, and implementation) Using the WMELS to assess children helps me to assess and plan curriculum for the needs of the child. It also helps to plan what type of skills and activities to do next. I can also use the WMELS to help me assess areas in my curriculum that may be lacking, therefore I am able to create a better rounding and complete curriculum to help each child reach their full potential.

Competency #8
Evaluate learning and assessment activities using the early learning standards for each individual child. The WMELS has suggested activities for each stage of development (from 0 through 1st grade). I can use these suggested activities to assess children. All children are individuals who develop at different paces. Assessing each child I can plan curriculum to their needs and strengths, helping each child reach their full potential.
