Lesson Topic: Alternate Genres Grade level: 11th Grade English Length of lesson: 50 Minutes Stage 1 Desired Results

) will begin b ta$ing a class vote on whether the !e!oir groups should be the sa!e as the literature circle groups or if the should be new groups* )f the class votes for new groups+ ) will count off to create the groups* ) will have the students get into their groups to participate in the activit * ) will give the instructions that the students need to choose one writer+ and the will have ten !inutes to thin$ of as !an different genres of writing as the can* As the groups are co!ing up with genres+ ) will wal$ around the roo! to listen to how the are doing* )f an groups are having difficulties+ ) will help the! out* As the groups are writing+ ) will write down genres on ! own sheet as well* When the ti!e is up+ ) will announce that the !ust all put their pencils down* ) will e%plain how the rest of the activit will go: ) will go around and as$ one group at a ti!e for a genre that the wrote down* )f another group wrote down the genre that the listed+ then ever one has to cross that genre off their list* Whichever group has the !ost original genres at the end of the activit wins* ),ll start with the first group- go to the ne%t one+ and so on until there ever one has read off the genres that the listed* As the students are listing off their genres+ ) will be writing the! down on a giant poster board that will be used as a reference for the rest of this unit* 'he point of this activit is to get students thin$ing about alternative genres+ and what can be considered writing* 'his will co!e in hand when the are writing for their !ulti-genre !e!oir pro.ect* /ast part of class: -) will introduce the !ulti-genre !e!oir pro.ect* &ver the ne%t few wee$s+ we will be !eeting in our !e!oir groups to share+ edit+ and revise various genres of writing for our !ulti-genre !e!oirs* 'he !e!oirs will be displa ed during a class s !posiu!+ where we will wal$ around and read the final products of ever one,s !e!oir* -) will have students do a thin$-pair-share about what the were !ost surprised about* Were there an genres that ou did not consider to be writing" Were there an that were obvious" What is one that ou are interested in using for our !ulti-genre !e!oir pro.ect" -0e%t+ ) will e%plain the !ulti-genre !e!oir pro.ect and s !posiu! and hand out the directions+ rubric+ and chec$list* -) will then give the groups ti!e to discuss so!e ideas that the have for their own !ulti-genre !e!oirs* Each group !e!ber should sa one idea that the have* -1efore the students leave+ the will fill out e%it slips*
